Hey all, I live in an end unit town home that has had my wife's vehicle and mine burglarized. Both times the vehicle was left unlock unintentional because sometimes your forget to lock vehicle but that aside, people should be in your vehicle wether its locked or not.
I want to put up a video camera that will be in my front door way that points to the parking lot where my vehicles are. Three of my neighbors cars will be in view however. Is this legal?
Sorry if wrongs place, legal matter not pertaining to guns.

Do it. No expectation of privacy outdoors and you will see all kinds of stuff. I have captured several drunk drivers on my cameras.

I'm curious about this too and there are threads already, so little time to read all the varieties.
Then again there is this website of cameras around the world, I think it is cameras that have not had their initial passwords changed, look for your city. Insecam

I called the Sheriffs office and was instructed with the following:
    -cannot record audio without consent
-cannot be pointed directly at someones window.
-basically go ahead in my scenario.

Now im trying to figure out DIY or professional. Ironpony, i put video surveillance on search bar and didn't find anything so if you have links much appreciated.
Different states have different laws regarding surveillance this forum was what i searched as i can here from my Maryland peers.

I don't do audio however the sheriff's department is wrong on audio in public (outdoors). There is no expectation of privacy in public, it is legal to walk around recording the sounds of outdoors all day long even if you capture voices. You won't gather much useful information in most cases by enabling audio and it will take up more space on memory cards, cloud services, and dvrs.

Even if you inadvertently include a neighbors window from a street level wide-angle camera, I don't see which law would be broken by including it (now, if you set up a tele lens on your roof specifically aimed at your neighbors bathroom window, I could see that you invade someone's private space).

Good camera software allows you to mask out areas that you don't want to include in your recording.

As mentioned above. A person on the street can't really claim any expectation of privacy. This has been tested, including cases where cops tried to abuse the anti-eavesdropping law to punish people for recording them in public. But then, you are not really gaining anything from the audio data either.

Get the highest resolution camera that is reasonable. Just be aware that you create a lot of data. If you own the home, mount the camera outside and out of reach, add good lighting. Most homebrew surveillance footage only allows you to tell you 'a blob and another blob did something and now my car window is broken'. To get recognizable faces helpful for the police you need more than your $399 16 camera system.

QFT! My system, which is 6 3 MP cameras, a server, and POE equipment cost me around $1200. I already had the HHDs and SAS controller and I used Debian Linux.

Good info, thank you. A two camera system with dvr and cable for 1080 recording is $700 rounded from one of the Maryland security companies i visited. Thats about the low end. Does buy once, cry once apply here.

    Sounds like a good installation.

Camera recommendations as to brand and or model?

Different brands/models for indoor vs. outdoor?

I'm not questioning your decision with my question. I'm just interested in others viewpoints. Do you actually need video? Could a high quality "game" camera get you what you're looking for at lower cost? Aren't you just trying to ID the perps?

I just came out of the field with my game cam card and I have named the individual raccoons at this point, and they wear masks! :)

Some good info in this thread, still wondering what it has to do with MD 2A....

A good home video recording system might be a good part of a self defense strategy.

In today's hyper-polarized world, it seems like "innocent until proven guilty" is out the window. Look at Travon Martin. Before the body was cold, people had judged Zimmerman innocent or guilty.

Having some evidence to back up your claim that you feared for your life might not be such a bad thing.
