Didn't want to derail the thread about the Gen 5 Glock so I started this one. I'm very interested in a Steyr L9A1 simply because it's one of the most hideous-looking pistols I've either seen or held. I got to handle one at 2A a few months ago and it has haunted me ever since. Any pistol that could make a Glock look attractive really has something going for it if you ask me?

Does anyone on MDS own and/or regularly shoot an L9A1? What do you think? If there's one country I can honesty say produces some of the most bizarre-looking firearms, it's Austria. It's like a matter of national pride or something.

I believe Smores had one and loved it. I think it's a pretty cool pistol myself.

    I have one. I also have a M9A1.

They are wonderful shooters. Almost no muzzle flip and the sight are insanely quick. They have proprietary trapezoidal sights.

I've watched a few YouTube videos this afternoon and it appears they are excellent shooters! I'm torn between the L9 and the C9, though? I like the C9's compactness but, I like the longer sight radius on the L9. Decisions. Decisions. I'm leaning towards the L9 because I know it'll become mainly a range gun for me.

Yes, trapezoidal sights may take some getting used-to but I'm willing to give them a chance. Steyr is known for innovative designs and doing things a little differently.

I've owned the S9A1 and the M9A1 (grey market version) - these are really nice, if under-appreciated guns. As for the funky trapezoidal sights, I actually was very fond of them. In fact, the only negative I can give the Steyr S/C/M/L-series guns is the lack of after-market accessories.

have a Steyr M40; 9mm would have been preferable, but i guess you have to have a couple of .40s. anyway, great for the price, love the ergonomics, trapezodial sights are a neat thing for people who have never seen one of these handguns to look at and say "what is happening here?"

i don't think it makes a Glock look attractive, though. Steyrs have a certain charm.

Ok, now I don't feel so bad, I handled one of these and its been haunting me to purchase one ever since...just that none were available when I had the opportunity...so now I've been trolling them ever since...

I heard just like all things it a Love-Hate relationship...but they're not that expensive either...decisions , decisions, decisions...???

There's a few out there to be had - not many - but a few. I'm keeping an open mind to the C, M and S models, too. I'd like to own a good striker-fired pistol and from what I've read and seen on YouTube, the Steyr looks like a great shooter.

Been on my short list for a while. Almost bought an M9a1 awhile back but got a deal on a used G19 I couldn't pass up.

If I had my HQL a Steyr L9 is probably the first thing I'd buy with it. I have some kind of addiction to Austrian firearms. Especially stuff made by Steyr.

I think it'd look good with it's older "cousin", the M1912. Some might call them ugly, but I think they have their own special charm.

They certainly do but I'll always think of Steyr-Mannlicher as a rifle maker first and a handgun maker second.

I bought one of the very first GB's that became available thru Interarms back in the mid 80's and it was absolutely one of the worst pistols I've ever owned - atrocious trigger, weighed a ton, gas would vent right back in my face on each shot. Shooting glasses should've come packed in the box with it. I know some folks loved the GB but I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

The L9-A1 looks solid though. It's definitely high on my list right now.

Sometimes it pays to not be in a hurry and sometimes you get burned for waiting too long. Then, sometimes, you're lucky enough to work with an IP on MDS whose got your back.

Thanks to Tom and Mark at 2A, I finally got my mitts on a pistol that's been on my short-list since last August - a once-fired safe queen that was traded-in for something else. It's absolutely clean as a pin. I would've never guessed it was used, that's how nice it is.

That was mine. Traded in towards a CZ SP-01 Tactical.

Glad it went to a good home.

I still have my M9A1, I only shot that L9 once, maybe 100rds.

Wow - I have a GB and do not have any problems with it. I need to dig it up and see how it shoots. Have not shot it in years.
