Just something that popped into my head this morning. I'll often see a deal on a handgun, but the shop is an hour or more away. If I only had to go there one time it wouldn't be a problem, but 2 trips often means it's not worth the time/effort.
Anyone ever heard of any FFLs starting paperwork remotely? I.E. mail you the 77r and 4473 and you send it back with copies of your DL and HQL.
Or is there some requirement for the FFL to physically watch you fill out the paperwork?

Should be required to match your State DL (or military ID) to you on the app.

    I think.

Sure, one dealer could transfer a gun to a buyer's local FFL, who would then process the paperwork and make the transfer, we do it all the time.

yeah, I guess that makes sense. the only other option would be to take you at your word, but match up the ID when visiting the store to pick up. I guess that wouldn't go over well if there was a discrepancy and they had to cancel the sale.

Thanks for that lovely 7 day wait MD. You've cut at least 7 or 8 potential stores out of my handgun purchasing options :tongue01

yeah, but wouldn't that involve an extra fee?

Sure, you will pay a shipping fee, but as paperwork is the most time consuming part of the job, many dealers have different (less expensive) pricing for guns simply transferred to another FFL, as that is by far the easiest transfer to do.

We researched this over lunch one day a couple months ago. It is possible to give your FFL power of attorney. Most states seemed to require you filing the forms w/ them. You could legally give your FFL the power to sign the 77r/4473 for you. You could then go pickup after the 7day wait. I even think they could mail it to you at that point - you signed for it after all;) You would have to find a FFL willing to do it however. I haven't pursued that part yet.

There should be a way to complete the paperwork, sans the make, model and caliber of the weapon, prior to going to a shop. Once in the shop, after the 7 day wait and paperwork is approved, you should be able to go and choose a weapon and pick it up.......but that makes too much sense.

I don't know if you can still do this. But in the past, if you had paperwork not disapproved, when you went to the store to pick up, you could buy a second pistol with no paperwork. As long as you did not step out of the store once you took possession of the first one.

This was pre-one gun a month.

seems dumb that you can't give all your info over the phone, or even fax copies of DL, passport etc and completed forms up front. Then when approval comes in and waiting period is over, you actually go to the store, provide original signatures etc as needed, pay and take the new toy home.
