I'm probably not the first to ask this, but say I wanted to purchase an AR SBR and on the upper have a can pinned/welded on the barrel. Would I need two tax stamps for this or just one? Say with the can the total barrel length would be under 16".

Under 16" with a suppressor permanently attached? Yeah, that's a two-stamp gun from what I recall.

Have you considered a 16" integrally suppressed upper? No need to SBR the lower, though the length will of course be that of a standard carbine. Just one stamp for the integrally suppressed upper.

This kind of thing drives me nuts about this. I can't put that upper on any other lower since they aren't registered as SBRs. So why does this require TWO stamps? Not yelling at you, just find this annoying.

What I really want is something shorter than a carbine with a 16" OAL barrel.

Specifically, I want to pickup the camo'ed SBR Engage had with the wire stock and shorty buffer tube. If I could pick that up with a 10" barrel and 4" suppressor I'd be happy about it. If I have to get two stamps anyway, I'll probably have them ditch the Flaming Pig and put an AAC brake on it. That way I can have an AAC can on it without having to take the brake off.

The UPPER isn't a two stamp. Its one stamp for the suppressor (pinned or not.) The upper is not a firearm so thats it. No more stamps.

But if the upper bbl is under 16" (pinned or not) the LOWER you put it on better be a SBR (= the second stamp.) No advantage to pinning a suppressor on for this configuration. If you already have SBR'ed lowers you're good to go. If you're buying it as a complete gun you will have to get 2 stamps at one time.

If the upper bbl is over 16" with the pinned suppressor attached you can put it on any lower. That can be a 10.5" bbl w/ a 6" suppressor, a 12" bbl w/ 4.1" suppressor, etc. No SBR. No second stamp.

    Make more sense?

What your saying makes some sense, it's just I can't put that upper on just any lower, it has to be on an SBR lower, and with the BCG on that rifle it can only go on that specific lower. If I only have one SBR lower, and that upper won't work with the other lowers, and I buy the firearm as a complete system, why would it need two stamps? Either way, it's just more money for the government.

The hypothetical pinned supressor < 16in could also be used with a pistol.

But as noted above , the only practical advantage of a pinned supressor is if the combo is > 16in in order to NOT be an SBR. if the combined length is < 16in, might as well have it removable, not disadvantage with the first setup, and still be able to use on multiple hosts.

    Rifle:
Pinned Barrel OAL >= 16" = 1 stamp and can be place on any lower (think of it as a silencer that only attaches to one system)
Pinned Barrel OAL < 16" = 2 stamps and must be on SBR lower = a waste
Unpinned Barrel OAL < 16" = 2 stamps and must be on SBR lower but silencer can freely move to other firearms.

    Pistol:
Pinned Barrel OAL < 16" = 1 stamp (still pointless IMHO)
Unpinned Barrel OAL < 16" = 1 stamp but silencer can freely move to other firearms.

Generally a pinned/integral silencer will have a barrel OAL of 16" so it is only 1 stamp.

Lots of confusing replies in this thread - If you permanently attach (silver solder or pin/weld) the suppressor to the end of a barrel, it counts towards barrel length in the same way that you can permanently attach a muzzle device to a 14.7" barrel.

    Ex: 10.5" bbl AR-15 with permanently attached 6" suppressor = 1 stamp.

    ThunderBeast has a 5" suppressor.

I have one coming for my .300 Blackout. Also to be used on my 5.56 rifles.

You will get some suppression with a short can. Not a lot. The factors that affect how quiet it can be are volume of the can and the number of baffles. Take a look at the monster on the De Lisle carbine.
