Good on the surface. Has the potential to be a nightmare. Maybe they could just codify what the powers of the ATF encompass and what they don't.

"Michigan Rep. John Conyers, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, previously introduced a bill in 1993 to turn over the ATF's duties to other parts of the Justice Department." (quoted from the same article link from above for reference)

This is interesting. Anyone remember the circumstances for Rep. Conyers proposing this then. I suspect that there may have been some political grand-standing behind that previous attempt to "declaw" the ATF.

    Where they send me.
Cut some fat and overhead, move the NEEDED parts to the FBI and kill the rest.
Alcohol and tobacco is mostly a state issue so let them handle that.

I have some respect for the FBI (some, which is a LOT more than for the ATF) so let them handle the firearms part. Would save a lot simply by cutting the tons of politicians and bureaucrats at the high levels which approve things like Fast and Furious.

    ^ Bingo. Good plan.

If it doesn't happen now, then in 2016.

This is the type of public "commentary" that ATF needs to hear.

Realistically I don't see this bill going anywhere, but it is definitely a shot across the bow of the ATF. I believe they were emboldened with the 7N6 ban, and felt that they could push this M855 crap though with impunitity. Congress is now saying "you have our attention". This is a big momentum shift in our favor (especially with the "publication error" back stepping they are doing).

I'll double down on your post. Sounds good, but since when does this administration care about limits of power?

Waco was in 1993, Ruby Ridge in 1992. Not sure if that influenced the congressman or not.

Holy shit, I guess great minds think alike

I have had this same idea for years

You didn't happen to read a paper on ThinkBig before it got shut down about this idea? If you did, I was the one who wrote that.

Plan D? Not worth the hassle.
    This is just red meat..

What we need is simple- remove all rule making authority..

From this point on no executive brach agency has the power to make any ruling without a positive vote by congress- they can propose, but Congress must approve or its null.

When they propose this we will know they intend to protect the republic.

    Nothing else will do.

Just split up their duties worth keeping! Is legislation needed? There are more important things to disassemble than the 2nd Amendment

Barely a majority have signed onto this letter concerning the green goblin bullets, so I really can't see this Bill gathering any steam. But who knows, there are some good arguments against their funding. The SS was lambasted over a few prostitutes, the BATFE goes years without impunity. Doing whatever they want, and basically holding the 2A hostage. We all know it's time for a change, but can the populous of this country get behind this and demand a change?
