Also, that brings up a question. Now that I am a Designated Collector, do I have to show the letter to the FFL during the process of purchasing multiple regulated firearms or is that not needed?

No. Just verbal to FFL. MSP verifies it when reviewing the purchase paperwork.

Lost my wallet, paid over the phone for a replacement. Took two weeks to receive the replacement card. Just a FYI to anyone who needs a reprint.

$20 for a replacement. Had to wait two weeks and eight days for my new glocks, sum bitch.

No, I don't think so, but I'd keep it handy, if you are dealing with a FFL that is not familiar with you. I've had one for years and have never been asked to produce it.

Actually, there have been cases where a dealer or dealer staff demanded to see the actual letter. Bass Pro Shop at Arundel Mills back during the Pre-October 2012 rush did it.

Here is the MSP 77r part 2. There is a small check box at the top to indicate DC status. MSP will check the database when they receive the forms.

There isn't any requirement to carry it around with you all the time is there..??

I didn't think there was, so I just keep mine in my gun safe along with my DC letter and a few other important documents. Only time I carry it in my wallet is when I'm headed to the FFL's to start paperwork on a new purchase.

Considering what a chore it was to get the thing in the first place, I'd hate have to go through the same thing you did if I managed to lose it.

Not in Maryland, unless you want to be prepared for an impulse buy.

I was dismayed to find out that if you are a Maryland resident bringing your handguns while visiting Michigan, you could be required under Michigan law to show your Maryland HQL to a LEO there on demand. Not sure how this would apply if you owned your guns pre-Oct 2013. (MCL 28.422(8))

A stark reminder to check the laws before you travel, even when venturing out of the safety of Maryland into lawless America.

Something does not smell right here.

    1. I would bet 99/100 Michigan LEO's have never heard of an HQL
    2. What happens if you don't have an HQL but you are in possession of a handgun purchased prior to SB281?

From the Michigan Code, section 28.422, which describes the license Michiganders must obtain to purchase or possess a handgun:

    (8) An individual who is not a resident of this state is not required to obtain a license under this section if all of the following conditions apply:

    (a) The individual is licensed in his or her state of residence to purchase, carry, or transport a pistol.

    (b) The individual is in possession of the license described in subdivision (a).

    (c) The individual is the owner of the pistol he or she possesses, carries, or transports.

    (d) The individual possesses the pistol for a lawful purpose as that term is defined in section 231a of the Michigan penal code, 1931 PA 328, MCL 750.231a.

    (e) The individual is in this state for a period of 180 days or less and does not intend to establish residency in this state.

So there are other States almost as screwed up as Maryland!

Indeed there are states that are more effed up than MD, don't know if Michigan is one of them, but they do exist.

The Michigan code seems fairly unambiguous with regard to states where a license is required to purchase or transport a handgun, but most states require no such "license" at all. "Carry" is an entirely different kettle of fish, especially concealed carry. Even so, if you're an MD resident traveling to Michigan with a handgun in your possession it might not be a bad idea to have your HQL with you.

Here is a good graphic based reference of various state laws regarding handguns that would be useful to anyone considering travel to another state while in possession. Note the "travel" map.....

Can someone post the approximate permit number? Trying to get a feel for how many have been issued so far.
