About every five years or so I seem to loose my utility folding knife. Well I did it again. For the past two times it’s been a Spyderco delica with full serrated blade. I use it for mundane chores like yard work, opening boxes, packages etc. Due to my habit of losing them I don't want anything too expensive. Common sense tells me I should just go with what works for me but just for the heck of it I figured I'd see if anyone had some suggestions. I really prefer the full serrated blade for what I use it for.

Check out the Byrd series by Spyderco for knives that are decent for utility knives and that wont upset you too much if you lose them.
I have a Byrd Raven and its a decent knockaround knife. Not sure about the full serrated edge though.

I've lost my issued spring loaded benchmade,
    Benchmade-MiniStrykerAuto.jpg

    my gerber backup gaurdian,
    guardian_gerber_big.jpg

    my kershaw assisted opening folder,
    ks-1550_sm.jpg

and plenty of no name knives. Nothing angers me more than losing a quality knife. But It does lead to improvements. I replaced the gerber backup gaurdian with a Smith and Wesson HRT dagger.

I like the S+W much better, and it was cheaper too. I also got an gerber fairbairn applegate tactical folder.

    It is very stout.

Back when I was collecting pocket knives, I seem to recall Columbia River Knife & Tool doing the best folding knives on the cheaper side of the spectrum. I imagine one of those or one of the less expensive Spydercos would give you a good bang for the buck, but a fully serrated edge might be hard to find. Given what you've listed, I don't see anything that really needs a serrated edge though (ie, no sawing through fibrous material like rope).

Whatever you do, it might be a good idea to make and attach a small lanyard out of brightly colored paracord, something like neon yellow or orange, to make it easier to find the thing.

A couple months ago I also lost my carry knife, a Gerber paraframe.

I replaced it with a Kershaw Leek. Assisted open, very sharp blade out of the box. And very thin as well. I prefer a plain blade to serrated, so it may not fit your requirements.

I 2nd the Leek. Mine (fancy one w/ CPM-D2 steel blade) has lived in my right pocket for over a year now. One of my favorite features is the reversible pocket clip so you can carry tip-up (default is tip-down). It has a safety since it's an assisted opener, but it's easily removable with a screwdriver if you don't like it (I would carry without the safety but it would sometimes get bumped 'on' anyway). I think you can get the regular model made of mid-grade steel for under $50.

Interesting to note, I've seen more than one or two cops in from totally different departments throughout MD carrying this model (or at least they were Kershaws - most were def Leeks tho).

+1 for Kershaw. I've been carrying a Kershaw clip of one form or another for 15+ years now. Never disappointed. I am a professional auto mechanic so my knife gets daily sometimes brutal use.

 I've carried one for about 10 years now. It stands up to almost anything plus the lifetime warrenty and sharpening mean they repair it and sharpen it for the cost of shipping it to them.

I'll vouch for the Kershaw Leek also, it's been a great knife. It seems to hold an edge quite nicely, and shouldn't cost much more than $50.

Get a good knife and then attach it to a lanyard. All you need is one of those simple retractable key lanyards. Its just enough to prevent you from losing it. Waterborne Specwar guys lanyard everything for a good reason..
My Issued Auto Benchmade has lasted almost 10 years and is still going strong.

    Damn, I shouldn't have said that...I'll lose it now.:sad20:

This is my favorite pocket knife. I am a carpenter and i abuse this knife everyday and it just takes it. The Aus8 steel in the blade is very sharp and stays that way even with hard use. I just can't say enough good about these knives. I also use a sog multi-tool and it is equally good. I use my multi-tool everyday for a miriad of different tasks and it still looks new. Its truely amazing.

Buy a good knife because it will last more than 5 years if you take care of it and try not to lose it. Leave it in the same spot at night so it will always be there in the morning and make it a habit to put it back in your pocket after each use instead of placing it somewhere else. These are simple steps I use and I have yet to lose any knife I carry and I carry three at all times for different reasons. Benchmade, Kershaw, Al-mar are the best folders in my opinion. Why would you go cheap? Who knows one day you might need that knife in a sticky situation instead of just for opening boxes.

I am in the same situation but for slightly different reasons. I just got back from 1 week in St. Lucia and for some reason I put my CRKT M-16 Tanto Blade into my shaving kit so I could have it while down there. Only problem was, at 2 in the morning when packing I thought my suitcase was overweight and my brain misfired and thought, "Well I'll just throw my shaving kit into my carry-on backpack :banghead: Funny Thing was I made it through the initial security screening but my girlfriend and I were randomly selected for the extra check and the lady got in a huge panic and was like "SIR WHY ARE YOU CARRYING A WEAPON!!!!" To which I told her it was 5 in the morning and I had no sleep and had no idea it was in there. She told me I could go allllllllll the way back to the front gate and try to check it, only problem was my bag was already checked and on its way to the plane so I had to "Attempt" to mail it back to me. Knowing how f*d up the TSA is I have written that knife off as never to be seen again. Now the hunt for a new knife begins in earnest.

Benchmade 527 Mini Presidio Ultra Lite is a nice light tactical that comes partially serrated as well as plain as well as black. They go for about $70...

I love how they automatically declare it a weapon. When I was young, I was taught it was a tool.
