The cases are sourced from overseas. Everything else is done by Hornady. This was developed for police departments who use TAP as duty ammo to be able to train at a lower cost. There was a segment on one of the outdoor shows about it a few years ago. Is it cheaper than a lot of brass cased? No. Is it cheaper than TAP? Yes. That was the goal.

For those who want to give it a shot, go for it. It is excellent ammunition, and does not have a bi metal jacket.

Their brass cased stuff is great in just about any caliber and purpose, the steel cased, at least for the 7.62X39 I have used was not simply repackaged, it used their bullet and powder in an outsourced(likely Tula/Wolf)brass case with berdan primer. Probably the best accuracy I have ever gotten out of my Yugo M70, and expanding design bullet with terminal ballistics better for some uses like hunting. For 5.56 I'm not a fan of steel cases personally, much less taper than com-block calibers, so it is much more prone to stick in a chamber, especially a tight one, not reloadable(hornady brass is excellent), and as much or more than some comparable brass cased mil-spec ammo. For me it wouldn't have a purpose, for others it may fill a role between cheap 4+MOA blasting ammo, and pricey match ammo.

I wish they'd put their Steel Match ammo out again. I hate losing brass during 3-Gun matches and their Steel Match pistol and rifle ammunition was very accurate out of my competition guns.

All I know is I was an RSO for about 5 years working one weekend a month. 99% of all AR problems were with AR that were shooting Steel cased ammo.

Again. I don't know what the problems were. There was a VERY HIGH correlation between AR issues and steel cased ammo.

As a result I reload and stick with brass.

    Just my two cents.

Hornady started offering those about a year ago. I don't mind I'll shoot that chit, would rather have the brass to reload though.:)

The 75gr Steel Match ammo is TERRIFIC, one of the cheapest ways to get into the heavy bullet game. I always buy it when it gets reasonably priced.
