Jim Sr. and anyone who might know, is hunting with silencers legal in MD? I have read from some people on other forums there are no laws saying it cannot be done and therefore legal, but it was so long ago I can't remember what exactly they said.

I have heard the same thing, had one guy say since no law states anything prohibiting, they can be used. Didn't ask the game wardens though, the last few years when one comes by we tend to talk trapping LOL. I too would like to know about this.

I used to have a regular customer that would always hunt with a suppressor. It was a T/C in 45-70. He said it would work great. If you were to miss. The Deer hear the 200 gr projectile go tearing through the woods past them. Run away from the noise and to him. It even worked when he did it on purpose. The best part was it was his cousins farm with a crop damage permit.

    What is that??

Deer eats away farmers profits- farmer calls DNR
DNR comes by and verifies/observes problem
DNR issues X number of permits (kind of like a coupon-if you will) One permit is good for one deer.....
Farmer then can "cull" as many deer as he is issued permits (any day of the year)--I think you may even use a rifle in an area that normally would only permit shotgun--but I'm only going on rumors about that.

We have big problems with deer over here on the shore eating up crops, it's bad down around Snow Hill. And now with groundhogs digging holes around ditch banks, we have been shooting a mess of them on.

LOL . . . Jim Sr, while I DO share, and possibly even exceed, your own cynical view of Maryland's political/legal system, we should try to keep the paranoia under control. IMO, we have to avoid developing the feeling that we need specific permission from State Circle to do what we'd like to do, and remember that it is indeed "OK" for us poor sheep if it is not specifically unlawful or injurious to others.

AFAIK, if it's not specifically prohibited by law, the law does not impact on it and the fact remains that something like this must actually be prohibited to be illegal. The associated activity must be defined as illegal to be a crime, a violation of a written statute to be quoted and the citizen charged with violating this written law.

I have a suppressed 10/22 and decided it would make an excellent squirrel and groundhog rifle. Paranoid myself, from almost 50 years here in the "Free State", I searched everywhere I could for any sort of federal, state or county **law against it**. . . AFAIK, none exist, and therefore, it IS legal, regardless of some field officer's potential "feelings", judgement, opinion or prejudice. I honestly don't care if it makes him/her awfully nervous or scares him/her a little, we're both grown-ups, I can always prove my device is legally "taxed", it's evidently not against the law to whack a few critters with it, and that's all we really need to know for all of us to have a nice day.

If this is incorrect, IF there are any contradictory facts in the law, if there actually exists a statute, someone PLEASE point me to it, otherwise, I'd have to say it is perfectly legal and would continue to act accordingly.

Hunting with a "silencer"? I don't know about that, but isn't a silencer a regulated device that requires a Federal permit (and tax) for possesion?

Yes Dave, there is a $200 federal "tax" that typically gets paid on a Form 1 or a Form 4, replete with fingerprints, photo and background checks on several levels. Once this tax is paid and hoops duly jumped, you may legally possess it. This is process is a PIA, but do-able for anyone who can legally purchase a "regular" firearm on a 4473 and quite commonly done. Possession of a suppressor or other Title II device without having paid this tax is a felony.

E.Shell, thats one of the rifles I would like to buy within the next few years. Is yours the kind with an integral suppressor?
Yes, mine is a 10/22 with an AAC "Cloak", built on a SS .910" Hogue match barrel. Other than the bore being a little bigger than .22 at the muzzle, it is difficult to tell it's suppressed. It was $600 + transfer about 5 years ago.

There can be a trade-off between sound abatement and accuracy. Mine is a little louder than some, but shoots to about 1/2" at 50 yards with decent ammo. Even at that, the report is SUBSTANTIALLY less than my Beeman R-1 5mm or my wife's RWS M48 .22 air rifles.

Mine does not have a ported barrel to bleed off pressure and reduce MV of "hi-speeds" to sub-sonic. This means I must use sub-sonics to avoid a super-sonic "crack", which is *amazingly* loud in the absence of a report. Other integrally suppressed types are ported and allow use of any ammo, but it all goes sub-sonic at the muzzle and the porting can diminish accuracy in some cases.

My only complaint is that even LR HP expansion is about non-existent with sub-sonic ammo.

yes, his has an internally suppressed barrel. The "barrel" is 10" I think, and 6" suppressor. Looks really nice though, I was looking at one when I was building my 10/22, but, I couldn't justify the extra cost.

Yeah, that's how mine is built - the "barrel" is only about 14", and the last 6" is suppressor guts.

I think Jeepdriver will have his with him on the 28th (Wow...I keep saying that like it's so far away!)

Yep, it will be there. I love it.

h2u just bought one as well. I've sold several to friends and regular customers and everyone has bee nvery happy with them. It is 10" of barrel and 6" of suppressor all packaged nicely in a 16" tube.

It's the perfect gun to start kids off with. No loud sounds to scare them. I've been starting everyone off with suppressed guns lately. Great traing aid!

Grrr.....what's the current price on these mothers? I think that this would be the ideal plinking on the mountain land gun.
