How many pins are in the rear sight base?

Two. The holes are crudely drilled (over sized and not even round on the right side), and the ends of the pins appear to be peened.

It's definitely been refurbed at some point. I just figure it was either half assedly refurbished or saw some more use after refurb, but prior to being stored away.

That's basically the condition of the non-refurb that I got. No refurb marks, but the bolt shows at least one scrubbing, along with the mag plate. It was arsenal stamped to match, but clearly the parts were scrubbed. I wonder if they were built using recycled parts initially, given the year of manufacture, during the height of the war.

It's a possibility, because rifles do turn up with older receivers, so they were definitely recycling those.

Do you have pictures of your non-refurb?

My non-refurb is a 1943. The war time stock has half of a Soviet CCCP cartouche on it. The receiver tang is undated, but the whole receiver has very coarse machining marks, so if it's not a '43, it's not far off. Bluing is only a distant memory for this rifle.

Crown and rifling are excellent, and the action is nice. It's like the rifle went through difficult situations, but the soldier knew how to keep it clean and accurate, which isn't surprising given the hit marks carved into the hand guard.

The first is a 1939 Tula with the disputed "DDR" East German /1\ mark. The second is a 1942 Izhevsk that looks like it may have the DDR mark as well. The rest of the stampings are just proof marks. How are the bores?

Thank you! Is there one you think may be more rare (if at all) than the other?

Initial look was bores weren't too bad. I have not cleaned them thoroughly yet, figured I'd leave the rust-inhibitors in there and not mess with it until I picked up some copper solvent.

Also, if anyone recommends a copper solvent, let me know.

The 39 Tula is more rare, but that's not saying a whole lot. A 1942 Izhevsk is about as generic as it gets because so many were made. Take some pictures of the overall rifle and we can tell you what kind of stocks you have as well.

I've recently cleaned up a couple of these and I used Montana Xtreme bore cleaner (not their specific copper remover product) and it worked quite well. It's some pungent stuff, don't give it a sniff or you'll KO yourself :) I would also be careful not to get it on the wood (but you'll proabbly already have the barreled action out by that point...

Just follow the directions on the bottle...

One of my Molots, I about freaked when I first checked the bore. It looked substantially worse than my other Molot from Classic, and worse than all my Type 53s even did. I was pleased when it cleaned up quite nice with lots of elbow grease and the Montana Xtreme... Ive used Hoppes #9, M Pro 7, Shooters Choice, Hoppes and Kroil mixed, and Shooters Choice and Kroil mixed, and the Montana Xtreme worked better for me than all of those.

    Good luck

Nice! I like the Molot boxes, and the cool little booklet they came with. I just wished they would have wrapped those bayonets better and avoided the gashes in the stocks! But, then they wouldn't have been 89.99 on black friday!

The finish is deep and seems well done, they are unique compared to all my other Mosins.

I think this Grade B batch has been far more interesting than any of the full crates I saw last year. And to be honest, the stock damage was worse on a few I picked out of fresh crates last year, than any of the hand selects I've seen this time around. Classic really hit a home run with this batch for the price.
