Senator EJ Pipkin is stepping down from his Senate seat on August 11. It has been an honor to have served with him. Senator Pipkin will be moving his family to Texas to pursue a Master's Degreee in Sports Management from SMU. He will begin classes on August 19. The four central committees from the counties he represents will be choosing his replacement. This is quite a shock. I am truly sorry to see him go. He has been an effective Minority Leader and he will be missed. I wish him all the best.

Hope he has more luck getting through to the jocks at SMU than we have had getting through to the jerks in Annapolis.

Mr Pipkin sees the handwriting on the wall is getting the f$&@ out while he still can. I wish I could be right behind him.

I believe...that the smart politicians in Annapolis are doing exactly this. You can only fight for so long before you become burned out, or neglect your family, friends, peers, ect. If he has neither the ambition nor the desire for higher office, might as well chase some dreams before you become too old to chase them.

Remember, while we may be shocked, public service as our founders understood it was never meant to be a life long job (ahem, cough, McCain, cough, Reid, cough, McConnel cough, Pelosi, cough, Bohner, cough, Uncle Joe...).

Pretty Bad when the people running Maryland are giving up and moving. Not good for our fight at all.

I am curious to read about whom they will choose to take his place. He is not my Senator (I am in 9A, where Kittleman is gunning for County Exec while Bates is gunning for his 2014 vacancy), but that would be a loss of a booming voice of reason in that "august" body.

    Sgt Preston here...

Interesting, looks like the Republican Party is giving up in Merry-Land...

Smart move Pipkin, banging your head against the wall just can't get it done here in the "Land of the Libs"...

Get ready for Round 2 of Gun & Fun Control beginning in January...

    Dear Sir,

First, I want to thank the citizens of the Upper Shore and the State of Maryland for giving me the honor of representing them in the Maryland Senate. My eleven years in the General Assembly has been a time of challenge as a Republican, a time of accomplishment as a State Senator and a time when I have learned much about people and what can be achieved when people are determined.

One’s responsibilities to family and oneself often change the direction of life. So, it is with regret that I am resigning as Senator from District 36. My last day will be Monday, August 12, 2013. I will carry with me both the bitter and the sweet memories of the past eleven years. My family will be moving to Texas, where I will pursue studies at Southern Methodist University for a Masters of Science in Sport Management.

I chose to resign now, rather than serve out my term, which ends in January 2015, in order to give the Republican who fills the 36th District Senate seat the advantage of serving the people until he or she runs for re-election.

Again, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity and honor to serve as your representative.

    Sincerely,

    E.J. Pipkin

That's *what* he's going to do, not why he's resigning. Has anyone heard the real reason?

Because SMU doesn't offer the degree online & you can't be a MD State Senator AND live in Texas? Sadly. Why does there have to be a reason other than that which he's already stated? There doesn't *have* to be some secret or unstated reason.

    True...

People can infer all they want, but the good Senator has earned the right to have his own reasons.

I'll be bothered to see him go, but I will never get between anyone and what they truly believe is in their own best interests.
