I'm new to the forums. Not new to shooting but only own a couple pistols, shotgun and a .22lr.

I'm looking to get an sks just for fun here real soon and have my sights set on one. What I need help with is an AR lower.

I've shot one a couple times in the past and just feel like it'd be nice to get something that I don't have to finish right away. I can't stand someone else telling me I can't or shouldn't have something I've always wanted, but I can't afford to throw down 800+ right now.

Here's a dumb question, are there any AR kits that fire the 7.62x39 round or are they all .223, .308 etc?

What should I look for? I'm sure everyone has their favorite companies, but it's hard to wade through all the stuff out there. Should I buy something super cheap like the complete Frontier lower? Should I buy a complete lower? Should I buy a stripped lower? Rock River, DPMS etc?

Looking at close up shots of the Frontier Lowers they don't look so hot. I'm sure they perform well but the cross sections of where the plastic/fiberglass come together kind of throws me.

I'm just looking for a start on a shorter gun, more M4ish, and don't know where to start.

Any help would be appreciated. Just want to cover some bases before some horrible unconstitutional laws are put into effect.

An AR15 lower is an AR15 lower

    The uppers are 7.62X39, 5.45 or .5.56

.308 or 7.62X51 is the AR10 (large frame), not the same frame as the AR15 (small frame)

Thanks for the heads up, I told you I was an AR dummy :) And I know the lower doesn't change for different calibers (for the most part). What I don't know is what's the best bang for my buck when it comes to different brands. I don't want a POS lower, nor do I want to spend 500 bucks for one either

I'm not a southern Marylander, but AR uppers come in all sorts of different calibers, pistol, rifle, rimfire, I've seen a 50BMG upper, as a single shot bolt gun and even a crossbow upper. I don't want to get into the which lower is better fight, but I've had good luck with surplus arms and aero precision lowers.

Fondled one a couple of weeks ago in the snow storm. That sucker is heavy!

I personally wouldn't spend Money on one but they're making 'em, so somebody must like 'em.
I was going to get one of the short magnum uppers, but I opted for the 450 Bushmaster instead, glad I did.

First, get yourself an AR Lower. They can be found for 100-200 dollars plus the transfer fee. It will take you 2 Months before the paperwork clears and you can take possession.
Once you get a lower, time is on your side as parts will come down some more. So read all you can on the board about builds and different equipment and start to figure out what you want to build. You can get uppers in various calibers, including 7.62x39. You could also have a couple different uppers to swap onto your lower. The lower must be purchased before Oct 1 as it stands right now, so get one and you can decide on the other equipment later. Oh and Welcome to the board! Most of my friends are down your way, we may know each other!

If you haven't already, I would check out WTG Tactical in White plains. I think they had some specials going on, and they can help steer you in the right direction too.

    Here's another dumb question:

Am I going to run into any hassle if I order an AR lower online to be shipped to a nearby ffl, then in a month order an sks? I shouldn't have a problem should I? The SKS isn't regulated so I don't see any issues...

Is this to all pawn? What all do they sell?

Its next to All Pawn. They sell alot of stuff, I just saw last week they had the AR special. Plus if they dont have if they can order it, or they recommend other places to get stuff.

One of my guns is in jail at All Pawn, so when I go check on it I stop by WTG too. :lol2:

    Actually :sad20:

FWIW, a good friend of mine showed me a Norinco (threaded barrel, not pinned) SKS that he has, NEVER fired since he's owned it.

He is trying to sell it for his son. (It's his son's SKS.)

I THINK he's got one, maybe two bricks of HP 7.62x39mm going with it.
(Not sure of that, but, he showed me the ammo.)

I'm not sure about the SKS being regulated. I thought it was, but you're the one interested in one so you may know better.

Assuming you're right and it isn't regulated, order them both at once. When they both arrive just fill out the apps for both, and one you'll be taking with you.

I haven't asked anyone this question so maybe someone can help and enlighten both of us. I just got my receiver and it says multi cal. on it. My question is can I put any upper, different cals. on the receiver and be legal, or if it says .223/5.56 do I have to match the upper with the correct matching cal.?

Widener's has LRB stripped (5.56) lowers for $155. When I bought my sks about 2-3 years ago, it was cash and carry. That doesn't count as your 1 gun a month BS.

Yes. Bullets are different sizes, which require different size mags.

    Not completely true.

.223/5.56 mags will work with a few diff't calibers - to an extent. Some will just reduce the total capacity of the magazine due to the larger round, others should be used with a dedicated magazine in that caliber.

Example, .223/5.56 magazines will work with 300BLK, no loss of capacity. No issue with feeding, for the most part - can vary by magazine type.

6.8SPC should use dedicated 6.8 mags.

    7.62x39 uses a dedicated mag.
