Don't count your chickens before they hatch, but this is breaking in the Washington Post about a manifest fissure on the Judiciary Committee about the so-called "Assault Weapons" ban in Maryland:

Proposals to change Maryland gun bill would allow some semiautomatic rifles

    <snip>

Del. Kathleen M. Dumais, (D-Montgomery), vice chairwoman of the House Judiciary Committee, is one of several from O’Malley’s party who have grown skeptical that a full ban is needed.

Dumais said that after 10 years in Annapolis hearing gun-control bills, she’s more accepting that there are rural parts of Maryland where gun ownership is a central part of life.

She said she was also swayed in part by the testimony of some of the more than 1,300 people who traveled to Annapolis this month to oppose the bill before her committee. Dozens, including some Olympic hopefuls, testified that their livelihoods in competitive shooting could be threatened. Many veterans said they viewed it as a right to own weapons like the ones they were trained to use.

“Several people who testified about the competitive shooting gave me pause as to whether a complete ban is appropriate,” she said.

    <snip> Much more here:

Expect some ferocious arm-twisting and leg-breaking from Busch and O'Malley now. You all---in THIS forum---have begun to split the grabbers on their allegedly lowest-hanging fruit: the AWB! Don't stop now.

I certainly don't direct strategy around here, but perhaps we should start showing Dumais some loud conditional love?! Lord knows MOM is almost certainly hammering her hard.

I am so amped about this!

This is great, I'm pretty sure she is one of the people I sent a very strong worded email too. I should be free by the early afternoon tomorrow, I'll likely swing by and say hello :)

Don't get me wrong, this is good news, BUT, Bushe wants the AR 15 banned,so even if the committee removes the AR 15 he will simply have one of his cronies introduce an amemdment on the floor to put them back in and it will be done.

Still unacceptable. I will continue to have the highest contempt and ill will towards her and her colleagues until they repeal the nonsense gun laws this state has, and go shall-issue.

But there's hope. If the banned list goes away, the licensing crap could be overturned easily in the courts. The bill loses almost all of it's bite.

Plus, if they're wavering now, more pressure could kill this thing.

There is a huge back story on this, and a great deal more.

There has been tremendous give and take. We got a lot of things removed. Our friends in the legislature - including some surprising new ones - did good things.

But the Governor is twisting back. He is making his last push. We lost some things tonight. We need to push much harder. We need them back.

Honestly, we can win this thing. They know it. We know it. But we gotta want it bad.

    Whatever you're doing, thanks.

Anything in particular we should emphasize when calling, faxing, and emailing our delegates tomorrow?

    I don't know.
Banning a few less rifles looks like they are tossing a bone.

The licensing along with the fingerprinting and registration of certain firearms, regardless of the number, is the key to this sh*t sandwich.

It drives the panic buying, is a de facto ban and in the long run will drive dealers away.

If all we are hearing is that they are considering banning fewer rifles, then the core of the bill remains intact.
