I just got an e-mail from Cardin, and thought this was interesting:

In the days and weeks following the tragedy at Sandy Hook, I have received thousands of emails from anti-gun control activists. Unfortunately, I have received less than twenty emails from the silent majority that supports common sense gun control laws. If we allow the small but vocal group of anti-gun control activists to drown out our voices, I am not sure any meaningful legislation will be passed in Maryland or Washington. I urge you to stand up and make your voice heard on this vital issue of child and citizen safety.

So in order to explain why he is getting hammered with e-mails against gun control, he has made up a "silent majority?" I feel that what he is doing is simply going against the wishes of the majority of those who put him in office.

I was just getting ready to post this message as well, I received it on my way into work this morning. If anything, it shows that our emails are being noticed. Is this making a plea to the antis to please also email in order to allow him to side with them?

Welcome to the world of double speak. Unfortunately, most people believe his version of the narrative.

It always plays well to portray your cause as being the oppressed minority.

Unfortunately, this isn't at all surprising. It has been quite a long time since at least some of the elected officials acted in accordance with their constituents wishes...

Dazzle them with footwork, baffle them with bulls - - t! Good Ole'Ben.

I always wondered WHY Cardin would allow himself to be on the late Ron Smith's show.
Here's the reason. Ron Smith was an intellectual powerhouse and Cardin would use Smith's show as workout....
    basically, mental gymnastics.

If they are silent, how the hell would anyone know what their percentage is to call them a "majority"?

    (Seriously)

Out of curiosity, is there a way to take this kind of BS to the media - ANY media outlet that will take it - and expose these jackasses for what they are?

Silent majority....what a crock of sh**.

I am sending this to him, any critiques or additions before I hit "Send"?

Hello sir. I am newly arrived to Maryland, and am appalled at the blatant attack on the 2nd Amendment rights of citizens here. I received a copy of your recent communication with the folks here, and am especially upset over the way you seem to push gun control agendas against the constituents' wishes, as noted here in a quote from your email:

"In the days and weeks following the tragedy at Sandy Hook, I have received thousands of emails from anti-gun control activists. Unfortunately, I have received less than twenty emails from the silent majority that supports common sense gun control laws. If we allow the small but vocal group of anti-gun control activists to drown out our voices, I am not sure any meaningful legislation will be passed in Maryland or Washington. I urge you to stand up and make your voice heard on this vital issue of child and citizen safety."

If you are receiving thousands of emails, would that not be the majority? Why are you pushing for legislation contrary to the wishes of the people you are supposed to represent? Especially if, when just a bit of research is conducted, it is readily apparent that that available facts show that gun control legislation doesn't decreased gun crime, but actually increased it?

As a father, a veteran, and concerned citizen, I urge you to do two things: accede to the wishes of your constituents, and do some research into what gun control really does. I think you will find that the facts show that gun control renders law-abiding citizens less able to defend themselves, and gives criminals (who do not obey laws as such) a much easier time to do what they will.

At this time, I would not consider voting for you, since you seem set to push legislature contrary to what your constituents call for, and what "common sense" would dictate. I hope you look into the comments I have made, and hope to hear back from you. Do not hinder my and others rights to protect our families and businesses, based on "feel good" legislation. Thank you for your time.

I posted this in the "Tax" thread, but it is relevant here as well.

I sent him this in response after I got his newsletter this morning:

    Dear Delegate Jon S. Cardin,

I had to respond to the outrageous comments you made in your "Annapolis Report" email this morning. It is clear to me that your constituents are tired of attacks on their Second Amendment rights. The Second Amendment has been gnawed away piece by piece for decades. Enough is enough. Clearly the email and telephone response that you have received from citizens that are against more gun control is telling. What is more telling are the extremely large number of Maryland residents that are also speaking with their wallets against gun control. The panic induced by people such as yourself in the name of "common sense" has led to a historic run on firearms and ammunition. There have been so many sales of firearms that the Maryland State Police cannot keep up with demand for background checks and are running weeks behind. Clearly, "common sense" would tell you that the vast majority of your constituents do not want more gun control. "Common sense" would tell you that your idea that there is a "silent majority" that wants more "senseless" laws that will do nothing to prevent crime is not valid. You need to listen to what your constituents are telling you instead of standing on your emotional moral soapbox.

Your scheme to fund mental health services by taxing the use of a Constitutional Right is appalling. The idea is a loser, right up there with poll taxes. There are other ways to raise revenues for mental health services that are not unconstitutional. Mental health is an extremely important issue that is more wide-spread than just associating it with firearms. Mental health services MUST be better funded, but not at the expense of a Constitutional Right.

That brings me to my final questions to you: Why have you not submitted legislation that will directly protect children in every school? Why are have you not tried to place an armed police officer in the places where our children are most vulnerable? "Common sense" would dictate that the opportunity to directly confront and deter an armed attacker is better than no opportunity at all. Please actually DO something that will actually PROTECT our children.

    Sincerely,

    Soda
