The NICS system goes down from time to time, even online. However, they can call on any land line or cell phone to complete the check. We do all of ours online since its more efficient and quicker, but we do it on the phone as needed as well. Sounds like apathetic n00bs to me.

    1. The managers generally don't remember diddly about the details of gun sales. They get the training, but there's usually only enough room in those little heads for so much data, bless their hearts.

    2. I don't think any of the MD stores use automated NICS checks. The computer just prepares the 4473 and stores the A&D log. The NICS call is made over the store's phone system. If our phone was out at our counter, I'd get yelled at if I blew off a customer and failed to walk 15 feet to the next department.

    3. La Plata has or had several Plinksters in stock, $107 for the black synthetic version, and everyone at that counter takes the job seriously.

not all are like that.. its just depends who is at the counter at the time. lucky the guy at the walmart near me is a gun afficionado too.

Thats why it's been rumored that you've hanging out at the Dunkirk store drooling on the glass in the back right hand corner of the store!

The people at Wal-Mart are either, stupid, lazy, or ignorant, possibly all 3 rolled into one. There is no reason why they can't use another phone to call and do the NICS check right there on the spot.

I went into the Gander Mountain in Washington PA to do a purchase (back in January 2012), and the guy at the counter explained that the phones for the whole store were down. He asked me if I would be willing to wait a few extra minutes while he made the call on his cell phone, for the NICS check. 30 minutes later (instead of the expected 20 minutes), I was out the door with a new toy.

Get the GM (General Manager) or the MOD (Manager On Duty) to show up at sporting goods and ask for them to either make the call from another line or to return the 4473 to you so you can destroy it. The GM or the MOD should authorize the use of another phone line to do the NICS check or if they don't authorize it, they should hand over the 4473, no questions asked.

hand them your cell fone and tell them they can use it to dial!!

i can only guess they don't want to use other phones, so that any long distance calls relating to sporting goods get charged to that dept. but, the nics # is an 800 number so shouldn't matter.

    WHICH WALMART?

    First off WHICH WALMART?
I may have missed it, but I don't think so.
this forum has many readers, it could save some of us time if we were to head out to the same store.

    2nd....
When you and your wife were looking at the gun, could it have been construed that the gun may have been for you?
Maybe they were thinking straw purchase.
    Just saying.

Isn't this what the 4473 is for? Why would Walmart employees be doing this? If they are suspicious why don't they call BATF or LE?

Spring Mills Wal-Mart, its in Martinsburg, WV. i don't believe they construed it as being a straw purchase, we didn't do anything that i'm aware of to give that impression.

I doubt it, most WalMart employees probably think a straw purchase is something they should send you to the lawn & garden section for.

Are you a WV resident? If not, they probably saw your MD license and flipped thinking you were trying to engage in an illegal purchase, due to them not knowing knowing jack about the laws.

no, i'm not a WV resident, however i would hope they know its legal, considering they did have the signs stating who could legally purchase a firearm as a resident of another state. however maybe i shouldn't assume or give them that much credit lol

This one is closest to where I live. It has the least knowledgable sporting goods associates of any wally world I have ever been to. Never anyone at the gun counter, just a buzzer to call for assistance. And the people who do show up do not know anything about guns. I was there yesterday and a guy asked if they had ammo for a .22lr. The woman who was there working had no idea what he was talking about and actually said they did not carry that. Had to point out the 7 or 8 different brands/package sizes they had on the shelf for her.
A year ago or so when some calibers were hard to find, the one guy who worked there would hide the ammo under the counter for his buddies to come by and get. I saw him pull it out and sell it them one day. From then on when i would go in I would make who ever was working check under the counter for ammo and buy all they had under the counter in calibers I shoot.
Get your money and 4473 back and go elsewhere, even if it is another Walmart.

I would go to the store and speak with the manager. If they won't use another phone in the store, I would offer to let them use my cell phone. If they won't do that I would get my paper work back and request the phone number for their district manager. This is horrible customer service.

To the OP, so what happened?

I had a great (recent) experience at the Walmart in La Plata... the guy's name was Mark, knowledgeable and nice.
