Any suggestions on the best insect repellant for deer hunting? First bow season and I don't want to scare away deer with the smell, but I don't want to be carried off of my deer stand by mosquitoes either. Thanks!

Off or Cutter. I've never run any Deer off with either of them. I load it on and Have had many Deer still come to me. n my experience, repellents scaring Deer away, is like the Full Moon theory. They are both myths.

I used to work in a swampy area on APG, until I found this stuff I'd get a crop of chiggers 2 or 3 times a year. The Deet never helped

"OFF" spray for the skeeters, and as for the chiggers, in Florida I was taught the following:

Get a bunch of the big wodden matches. Then with a razor scrape all the match head material. Do a whole bunch of matches. Mix the "stuff" with water into a thick paste. Apply to the ankles, wrists, and around your ears. The old hunters told me that the sulfur and phosphorus in the paste would keep the chiggers away. I've tried it and it works.

Permethrin or permanone on your clothes the day before so it dries, there is no smell to this. Then any spray that contains a crapload of deet on your skin. You will smell with the deet sprays so take your chances, me I just try to hunt downwind from a deer trail. It's worth it to me to not get ticks or chiggers.

Include tick repellent. I know some clothing now has the insect repellent IN it already....won't help your exposed body parts, but it's a start.

I'm willing to bet that sulfur will keep the Deer away too. I also can not imagine shaving that many matches. It would be easier to just buy a bag of sulfur. What makes the least sense to this idea is that all/most Deer Repellent sprays contain Sulfur and red pepper powder.

What I don't understand, from ready every thread based on this same conversation i every year is, does no one wear pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, hat, and a face mask ?

I've never had an issue with bugs due to the full camo and netting face mask. I buy the H.S. Strutt face masks in bulk. When WallyMart has red tag sales in the end of the seasons I buy every one on the shelf.

I also never step foot in the deer hunting woods without gloves. I don't like the idea of waiving white flags around swatting at bugs.

Yep, I wear all of that. Deters mosquitos and no see-ums but unless I've treated my clothes with permethrin, it doesn't do anything to repel chiggers or ticks they always seem to find a way. The one year I even duct taped my pants to my boots and tucked my shirt into my pants and then duct taped the seam. Still came out with ticks.

I hear ya. The last time I was in the woods (about 3 weeks ago) I got destroyed by chiggars, I'm still scratching 3 weeks later. Skeeters and ticks don't bother me as much as those damn chiggars.

REI sells some stuff that you treat your clothing with, not your skin. Stays for several washings. I've had great luck with it for my hiking clothing, and I still run into plenty of deer on the trail.

Used 96% DEET on skin and clothes but was totally covered with chiggers 2 weeks ago. Gonna try permethrine.
