    Hey ya'll...

I'll try to keep this description brief (sorry for the wall of text), will add pictures later when I get home.

I've had my Express Tactical since 2009, I have used RemOil on it up until this year, I switched to Eezox (thanks Hafers :)) -- I've never had an issue with rust, but that was when I lived in a living situation where humidity was not an issue.

Now for the past two summers I've lived in a hot humid environment, I now have a gun cabinet with a goldenrod gunsaver and an oven charged silica gel thingy. I keep the 870 in a silocone treated gunsock.

Last night I inspected everything, and all in all, the majority of the critical parts and areas look great, oiled, rust free. My rust problem sits in the end of the extended magazine tube, very difficult to reach. I'm thinking about bending a bore brush and scrubbing, but I wanted to get some advice here first... I had already scrubbed some with a bore brush and eezox, and it looks a little better. Just a little.

Coworker suggested brushing with Hoppes No 9, I have used this as a bore cleaner since I've started shooting, but I am not aware of how well it removes rust. If No. 9 is good at rust removal, would it be safe to simply let the magazine tube soak in No. 9 (based on the fact it's really hard to reach in there and scrub off the rust...)

Any and all valid suggestions are appreciated. I'm also considering a refinish of some sort when this is all cleaned up. Either parkerizing or cerakote I suppose. Or both? Or would that be overkill?

I suppose a quick way out would be to just replace the magazine extension with another. But I want to try the cheaper routes first. :o

    Thanks all.

Some 0000 steel wool wrapped around a dowel might be able to do the trick.

    I don't have a extension on my 870, so I couldn't say for certain. It's just a thought.

depending on what the extention is made of.. hoppe's 9 had amonia in it.

+1 on steel wool and rod.

It's Remington factory extension, so it's probably the same crappy finish on the rest of the gun.

Hoppes No 9 has Ammonium Hydroxide per MSDS, I'm not an expert on that, so what would be good and or bad about it?

    corrosion?

I wouldn't be soaking it and storing it with Hoppes. I was thinking along the lines of wetting/soaking the rusted area in Hoppes for a short while and then scrubbing, and then blowing it dry and applying more Eezox

Edit: I thought 870s were steel, not aluminum?

I thought the 870 Express were steel and not aluminum? This article mentions aluminum.

Again I'm not an expert or a chemist. :)

    neither am i.. ;)

there are parts in 870 are made of aluminum.. like the reciever i think its made of aluminum..

So, just to clarify, does Steel + Ammonium Hydroxide (extended exposure) = Bad?

Also, still questioning the possibilities of refinishing. Any input? :)

It can be, still has water in it.

Thinking about it, that was kind of a silly question since to my knowledge it's normal to apply some solvent and allow it to sit for a short while to kick in, then wipe it out and follow with oil. This would be no different. :)

I guess I'm just really paranoid. I want my guns to outlast me.

If its just surface rust, its fine. wipe it with oiled patch and your gtg.

Modern 870s are not well fit or finished. Nothing you do will keep that gun from rusting unless you get water transfer, marinecoat/nickle, or a spray on finish on it like ceramic cote.
