The money is about the same, most of what I have read say's go with the arsenal...BUT something about the Russian RAK AK47 has my eye. I guess I'm wondering how the two stack up in terms of quality. I'm indifferent to folder/non-folder.

the Arsenal is Bulgarian and the Russian is a Saiga.

Both are excellent rifles!!! Now it comes down to do you want Wood Furniture in Russian Red or you want an AKM thats poly and a folder.

Personally I would want one of each.

Kalashnikov has been quoted for liking the Arsenals over the AK made in Izhmash....I don't think you can go wrong with either.

if it was me.....I prefer Bulgarians. I bought a WASR and refinished the stock Russian Red and the SLR 107 is on my want list

As FPS said, they are both based on good imported rifles. The 107CR will have a slightly shorter sight radius due to the combined front sight/gas block, but it also has a quite good polymer folding stock which is a huge plus.

Personally I would go with the CR. You can get nearly any old AK and make it look like the RAK with very little effort.

I wanted a Arsenal so damn bad, after not finding the one i wanted under 2k. One day at the range i happen to see Harry from GC and he knew I was looking for one and told me to stop up and see him that he has something i may be interested in. So the next day got off work went up there and purchased my Polish 60 with the milled reciever. Shoots like a dream, I love it man. An AK is just fun and cool to shoot no matter what kind it is, LOL!

Whats with the $2k talk. You can get Arsenal 74s all day for $900. My dad got his off of GalleryofGuns for low $800s last year. I say Arsenal, my dads is a very nice shooter.

Go with the Arsenal 74.I have a SGL-31,and it is a real joy to shoot. Very light recoil, and ammo is cheap. I use "Military Shooters" as my source for ammo. Fred is a super guy, quick delivery.
The Ak is holding history in your hands.
    Best.

Milled receivers cost more than the stamped ones, hence the price point closer to $2k.
I can get a decent milled Yugo for like $600, so I don't think the receiver is truly the issue.

$2000 is Galil/Valmet/Krink money. I sure as hell wouldn't be spending it on a bog standard AK carbine.

The reason many people buy the SLR-107CR is that they plan to SBR it and cut the barrel length to under 16 inches to make it more practical and authentic to the design. Is that what you plan on doing going the NFA route?

Otherwise you would be better off with the RAK.

I have no plans to SBR it. I'm just looking for a decent quality AK in the 1k range, that out of the box is fun to shoot and reliable.

Then go with the RAK and save the extra money for ammo and mags.

Or if you like the 107 because of the poly look you can get standard Arsenal models like the RAK for much less than $1000.

Also I wouldn't buy from Atlantic. Although they are a good company, if you are a Maryland resident you will get raped on fees. You would be better off at that point either buying local or going online out of state.

Dont overlook the Yugo Ak's! I did for awhile and after I got my first one I was hooked. They are built like a tank, heavy 1.6mm receivers. My Yugo is the smoothest action of any AK I have. The bore is not chrome lined but they are hammer forged, by the time you wear the barrel out you will either be very old or poor from buying so much ammo. I have to say that the Yugo Ak's are my favorite, even over Russian/Bulgarian.

I love the Classic SA and the SAS. right now I cant swing the 2K. I bet there good shooters though.

Personally the wood stocks would get changed and side rail mounted, The SAS would get a Krebs front rail

Atlantic is selling Veprs converted with the Ak grip and handguard, 1K though, also good shooters.

    A guy can dream.

Kind of out of left field, I picked up a TG International FEG AMD-65. Price was right, read some good feedback. Somehow you guys talked me out of the original two and in to the AMD:innocent0
