My wife and I went to the skeet range this afternoon, as we where unloading I sae and getting ready to go to the skeet range I saw 3 people coming from the rifle range.

While we where setting up I saw the same 3 people coming down the trail to the range with all 3 had arm full of stuff, The guy asked if he could set his stuff beside mine and I agreed, my wife was loading the thrower and I was getting ready to shoot. I heard the 3 two guys and gril talking about safe handling fire arms. When I turned around the one guy was showing the other two how to handle a firearm but they where right behind us. I spoke up and asked them not to handlethe firearms while we are on the firing line. The guy said they are unloaded and I told him that is how accidents happen. They where good about it and put up the shotguns. and I started to shoot. I was about to finish up a box or shells and was turning around to tell them they can shoot a box but they packed up and where heading down the range.

I was going to be a nice guy and take turns each of us shooting a box of shells then switch off. I was even going to let them use my thrower, it is ashame they cought an additude and went away.

On the other side, I took out my Browning auto 5 that my dad left to me,
After about 10 rounds I was starting to hit the clay targets most of the time, however when the wife was loading up two at a time I could hit the first one but always missed the second.

it would be nice if they use the money to buy land to build new and more shooting ranges around the state

I do not think they can build new ranges within the urban sprawl in MD. MG probably went in it the 50's or so before sprawl and PC. That said, I do not understand why they cannot build more lanes as the local population has more than tripled (conservative guestimate) since the opening of the range.

They should allow a sponsor to build a roof for shade. There are plenty of rednecks that shoot there and own the equipment to build a respectable structure. Well under the scope of 4 million could expand the range from 8 lanes to 12-16. I cannot think of any other tax payer recreation where people have to wait up to 2 hours to play for 1 hour.

Then there are the people from out of state (and country) that do not pay taxes and show up and occupy a lanes for $20 per year. That should be at least $100 for out of state paid directly to the range improvement. I am one of those people and I think it is wrong to benefit from the tax base in a place I do not live. I even bring my friends from UK as a tourist attraction. $20 out of state per day pass would be completely reasonable rather than $6. The market says Berwyn can charge $400 per year plus $200 initiation for the same facility plus shade and grass. Berwyn is a nice club, I enjoy shooting there, but it is everything the grove should be.

MG is not running as a business. They should be using the revenue to improve the facility in order to generate more revenue.

The area directly south is prime to expand the range. It is tree removal and earth moving. I use to do commercial tree removal and what is there is not a big job. I am not sure about the earth moving, but I am sure it can be done for less than a million dollars and directly benefit the taxpaying shooters.

I can think of a lot of places jsut in charles county that could host a shoting range Ciderville park could host a very nice range howling point wma can host a nice range then new burg has a lot of open land and so on

IF they do extend M.G. they could sell the wood and the gravel and help off set the price of the project

They could build a butt load just in AA county.

Although I don't agree with taxes going to subsidize my hobby any more than them going to subsidize anyone else's. Excise taxes being another story.

    i disagree.

sportsmen already pay special excise taxes on every gun, ammo and other stuff which is meant to pay for this kind of stuff, add to that the range fees, and the miniscule budget spent on the range, and there is simply no reason why they shouldnt improve the range under the existing funds, the problem is the funds we're already paying are going elsewhere.

out of staters like you and my visiting family etc, already pay for the range because when they come to the state to hunt, or shoot or fish they are paying special excise taxes, the range fees are just a bonus. if you have ever bought ammo in MD when going to MG, you have already put money into the tax fund that is reserved by law for this kind of thing.

that said, if we had some kind of written agreement voted on which specifically stated that the range would be expanded and inproved if higher range fees were put in place, i would be all for that, but right now i have no reason to believe that higher range fees would lead to anything but more of the same.

on another note, i was just down enjoying our beautiful grove today, desp[ite the heat i had a great time, , only 2 other people there the whole time, and the heat wasnt all that bad, the shotgun range was in shade the whole time too so it was ok.

shot my garand, gsg-5, romanian tt-33 and my mossberg 835 on the clay range. had my brothers GF with us her first time ever shooting and she had a great time, another convert, not that she was anti or anything, but the more interest the better.

Yea those special chesapeake bay tags are a good example..Millions raised to help clean the bay that ended up just going into the general spending to cover budget shortfalls. There are many examples of that in MD, yet we still remain in the red and face credit rating downgrades...:sad20:

When we had this same discussion last year, the idea was to sell the dirt/gravel to an aggregate company and use that revenue to feed back into the range project.

As for the roof building sponsor... we tried that angle too.

Went down today to put a few through my Enfield and my friends Mosin. Nice cool breeze, but it kept ripping my targets down. Yogi was there, hollerin at some young folks on how to shoot, blowin his rape whistle etc. The funniest part was when the girl was shooting.

Yogi: You shot high and to the right.
    Girl: hehe.
Yogi: Don't laugh it isn't funny.

    PRICELESS

I guess i'm starting to feel like alot of people. He may be a little prying and overbearing sometimes, but atleast he keeps an eye on things and keeps everything going smoothly. Second time in a row he picked up my friends firearm without asking though, he was not happy :lol2:

Great crowd, met some new people :party29:

Yea, I couldn't imagine picking up some strangers firearm without their permission. Heck, I feel like I might be overstepping my boundaries when I ask certain people about their firearms, let alone touching them without their permission. Yogi offended me one time when he asked me to have my action open on my sks, I said it doesn't hold open like that so he helped himself to stick a .308 casing in my chamber. Made me a little mad. I know he's right and its supposed to be open by the rules, but he shouldn't have picked my weapon up and closed my bolt on a casing. It's a good idea, and I do it now, but he shouldn't have touched my weapon.

That is the firsr rule of firearms never touch a weapon with out asking second is treat all firearms as if they are loaded.

I have encore and contender handguns and shoot some large rounds and get strange looks, If someone has questions about what I am shooting I have no issues with someone asking me about tehm at a break, I normaly will let them shoot it. this is 1/2 the fun about using M.G. is talking and seeing, shoting things that you normaly wouldnt get to.

But if someone grabs my firearms with out my permison I would have something to say and maybe more depenidng how it was grabbed.

picking up a weapon could be considered a hostile act.:mad54:
