Intersting to see the boy scout handbook - although i agree its a good book I would have rather taken the boy scout field book. I didnt see can opener on the list -- thats a must. But looking at the list I guess this guy is converting his basement for storage. Personally If you cant carry it on your back then you got too much stuff.

Allium, a lot of people in this country don't like 20 minutes from major metropolitan areas. Thereby if the SHTF they don't need to take off running.

That being said...this guys list is wonderful, but unless you've got an extra 5 or 10 thousand dollars laying around (and a cabin up in PA or WV to store it all at if you're anywhere near the middle of Maryland LOL) it's just stupid.

I fully expect to have to survive a SHTF situation in my lifetime, but hopefully it will wait another 5 years at least, so I can get myself moved out to Utah or Colorado LOL Until then, I'll just stock up on guns and ammo LOL!

I tend to disagree. Look at the famous USA at night and you will see the east coast lit up like a christmas tree. From that one can infer that maybe half the population lives east of the mississippi. While there are rural places like Maine or vermont most of the people reading this forum live within a gas tank of a rural area. In the even of a bug out you have 3 choices - hunker down in place which if I was in Utah I'd probubly do, Load the car and go in which my jeep can run all day at 5 miles an hour or 4 hours hwy driving but if I did that I would have choice 3 - pack it out. I would think the cabins in the poconos or west VA would quickly be over run by city folk so the best bet is a lot of ammo. I think the focus should be on surviving the first week or 2. Planting seeds? Burpee expires in a year and if you were to hunker down you should have a garden in place. I've lived for a week on what I carried on my back excluding water on a number of occasions and you can find out what you really need fast.

Then again who we kidding - with CIA, NASA, NSA and the capital targets within spitting distance we wouldnt survive the first go round.

I read somewhere a couple of years ago if you draw a line East to West across the USA at Atlanta and another East to West Line through Boston and a final North to South through, I think, Cleveland - the box that you just made holds about 82% of the US population...

I've already got a place picked out to head for.... It's only a quarter tank of gas away from my house and from my work...

But honestly, there are NO good solutions for people in this area... Thus why I'm heading west...(plus the snowboarding, shooting and offroading is better out west LOL)

I'm with you. I'm planting the seeds of thought in the minds of my family and gf.

Within a few years maybe I'll be living on several dozen acres in Montana/Wyoming/Colorado/some other Rocky Mtn. state :)

No you guys got it all wrong. You need to settle in an area where there are namby-pamby, Hillary Clinton - voting, no-carbon-foot-print, tofu-eating, types. Then, in a STHF situation you're king! You can have all the Charmin in the neighborhood and make them carry it to your house.

Funny you say that-the president of my company once told me I was "wasting" my time collecting guns and ammo for a SHTF situation because I can't eat steel or lead. He told me he was getting his pantry and other supplies in order so his family would survive any situation. He lost his smugness when I told him, "No problem-now that I know where a good stash is, my family with our "guns" will come over and take all of his food.... I told him we'd be nice enough not to destroy his house or hurt his family but couldn't guarantee other families or "groups" would extend the same courtesy.
He is now the proud owner of an Remington 870 and Glock 22:D

I'm more worried about a collapse similar to Argentina's earlier brush with disaster. A really good recession could push us into a collapse where armed gangs get by through kidnapping and extortion. Where just enough of us still have jobs that society functions a little bit normal, kinda like the first mad max film but no where near the others....Something where holing up isn't an option but heightened functioning is.....The very well off have guarded compounds/gated communities, the worst off live in "do not enter" zones and the rest of us live in No-Mans-Land....

I love those of you saying, just stock up on ammo and then you can get whatever else you want.

Congrats...you have no morales whatsoever. Sure I would have no problem killing man or beast to feed my family or protect them, but I'm not going to base my plan on killing others who just were more prepared then me....I'm going to base my plan on being more prepared then them, but also having the capability of defending myself no matter what comes up against me...

Seriously, If you can't recognize a joke.............
My statement was used to elicit a response from my boss. It got him to thinking that he just might want to reconsider that at least one firearm could go a long way in protecting his family during "lawless" times. I very seriously doubt that anyone here would be a part of the roving zombies out terrorizing other families to get their provisions.

Yes, I was totally serious that in a survival situation the first thing I am going to do is go house-to-house looting Charmin because that no-name store brand is too rough for my tender hindquarters, not. And by not, I mean the go house-to-house stuff making my imaginary namby-pamby neighbors carry their supplies of brand-name toilet paper back to my house, not the other part about store brand toilet paper being too rough for me which is totally true and why I'm one of those people who panic at the first snow flake and go to the grocery store and load all the Charmin into my cart and stand in a long line of people who might actually need necessities in a snow storm and when I get to the head of the line I pay with a check and argue with the clerk about the sign that says "12 items or less, no checks" saying that 40 rolls of Charmin is actually one item.

That list may have been partially generated by a guy named FerFal who lives in Argentina and was posting some of his observations of life during their crisis there over the last few years.
