Made a rocket stove out of some bricks we had lying around. Works really well, and is "self feeding" if you have a child who enjoys feeding it.

This is going to be one of our Cub Scout activities this summer.

Rocket stoves are pretty cool. Something i want to look into further.

Neighbor of a relative has a rocket style stove to heat his home. It requires constant attention by way of feeding it small pieces of wood. No easy auto feed like a pellet stove.

From what I've been told about theirs versus the description in the link, I'd say they must be doing something wrong.

The type in the link has a mass built around the heater to absorb heat. Once the fire goes out the mass radiates heat into the room. Is that how the one your describing is set up?

I'm pretty sure it was a half hearted attempt at making one. From what I understand most of the unit sits outside of the house. Now that you've piqued my curiosity I will ask some questions the next time I'm around that way.
