By law they are NOT regulated. What some dealers may do is another thing.

However, you must be 21 to purchase one since they are classified as "other".

Look for the particular 500 model that has both stocks in the box (pistol grip and full)?

I imagine the pistol grip itself isn't regulated
but a shotgun with one on it is

They sell pistol grips seperatly I think

Of course I wouldn't ever encourage someone to find a way around some idiotic law

I work for an FFL so let me set this strait.

For MD laws a shotgun is a long gun period 4473 out the door.

However per Federal Law the Mossberg 500 with only a pistol grip and no stock you must be 21 to purchase but is done on a 4473 and out the door you walk.

I suggest you read the MD regulated firearms list then. The Mossy 500 in the bullpup configuration is a regulated gun. A standard 500 is not. The Streetsweeper shotgun is also on the regulated list I believe.

Just buy one with a stock and put a pistol grip on it...

    That can create other issues:
per ATF newsletter--a firearm with a pistol grip in lieu of the shoulder stock is
not designed to be fired from the shoulder and, therefore,
is not a shotgun. Since it is a firearm “other than a rifle or
shotgun,” the purchaser must be 21 years of age or older.
Additionally, interstate controls apply. The licensee and
transferee must be residents of the same State.

Changing a shotgun to a "firearm other than a rifle or shotgun", you can be construed to be manufacturing a firearm.

I bought a used Mossberg 500 from a local gun shop over 15 years ago. It was sold to me with only the pistol grip and a 18.5" barrel. I can't remember if there was a waiting period or not. So what exactly did I buy... A long gun or something else?

When you fire that sucker with the pistol grip, wear your wrist brace:)

Since your trigger hand/arm can't absorb all the recoil, your arm on the forend needs to absorb some. Some mossbergs come with a nylon webbing on the forend for this that your hand fits into. There is more than one youtube video of someone firing a pistol grip gun incorrectly. Try not to be that person.
