MD Elections 2014 - Research Project

The idea here is to get a list of the legislators along with what we know about their votes and positions on issues. This is a work in progress, and your help is requested.

    Where to start?

    1. Find your Legislative voting district
    2. Scroll down to your district in post 1, 2, 4 (post key and State level races - AG, Gov). There you will find information about the legislator.

    General Information:

    Networking / Events

    TO-DO:
    • Analysis of 2014 Election results
    • Identify fundraising events
    • Identify FSA amendment votes that conflict with a legislators final vote. E.G. - look for votes against 2A-friendly amendments by legislators who ultimately voted Nay on the passage of the bill.
    • Look at threads for districts and link in info

Jennie Forehand (D) - not running for reelection
She was 1 of 2 Democratic candidates in 2010, winning the Primary Election by just ~350 votes. She easily won the General Election. Speculation is that she is not running for reelection, at least in part, because she is anti-gun rights in an election district race that will be close.

Analysis: In 2010 General Election, Jones-Rodwell received 5,727 votes and the opposing (R) candidate received 289 votes. As such, whoever wins the Primary Election will likely win the General Election. Register as a Democrat so that you can vote in the Primary. Since Nathan-Pulliam was not a cosponsor of FSA-H, this is probably the better choice between the 2 Anti-2A (D) candidates?

House Of Delegates (cont from post 1)

    What is already done:
    • All future districts listed (but not all candidates)
    • ID of sponsors for bill FSA-H
    • votes on FSA - HJC and the floor, MJD, BB, RT, ST, TR, GT, DP, MW
    • ID Districts where there is only 1 candidate running for the Election
    • ID Districts where a DINO strategy may be effective
    • Some NRA-PVF ratings for Primary Election
    • Analysis of 2010 elections - through 2C (which is no longer a district)
    • Analysis on Districts 1A, 1B (partial), 1C, 2A (partial), 4, 8, 11 (partial), 15, 21, 29A (partial), 29B (partial), 29C (partial), 33 (partial)
    • Verification that incumbents are running for reelection in 2014, listing of them in the correct district
    • This post is current through post 440 on this thread. If you see something I missed, please bring it to my attention.
    • Removed Candidates and Incumbents who did not make it through the Primary Election

    TO-DO:
    • Add in non-incumbents who are running for election. For now, I will only be adding those who we know something about.
    • Identify FSA amendment votes that conflict with a legislators final vote. E.G. - look for votes against gun-friendly amendments by legislators who ultimately voted Yea the passage of the bill.
    • Research and votes on Common Core legislation - anybody know the bill numbers? It looks like Smigile's bill to repeal Common Core was in the House Ways and Means committee but never got a vote - http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/frmMain.aspx?pid=billpage&stab=03&id=hb0076&tab=subject3&ys=2014RS

Anyone know who runs this website?
    http://www.freestatedinos.com/

Would be great if they just gave a list of who is running in each district and who we should be voting for. At least something to streamline the information gathering process.

Good question. I looked there before starting this thread, and the site does not look current.

Also, there is an NRA list of incumbent ratings somewhere. I have not yet found that list

I propose we have a meetup to get organized on this. In person and/or virtual to get as many folks in the conversation that are interested in getting involved.

Right now, it looks like there's about 10 different directions going on and too many balls off the field.

What do you all think? Maybe in 2 weeks?

Interesting fun fact.... Simmons is running for the Senate. He has a democrat opponent.

So if he loses the primary by chance, he is gone. Wouldn't that be a shame?

Vallario has 5 democrat opponents in his district... Well, you know the rest.

Dumais has 4 democrat opponents in her district...

Might be a lot more fun to just get a different democrat in actually.

Can you imagine going to their campaign events and talking about that vote reversal last year...? On not allowing criminals to reduce their time served of it was with a gun? Wonder how the folks down there in MoCo would take to that?

    Thanks!

Added to district 17 candidate for Senate. Currently he is on House Judiciary, correct? Voted in favor of SB281 /FSA?

    Yessiree.

Voted in favor of it? That's an understatement. He has has own signature accomplishment of slipping in the PBJ amendment clause, which we fondly refer to as "The Simmons Amendment". There's an entire thread here on that gem.

And admitting on tape to confiscation being the end game.

And this year working on more ways to confiscate guns.

I really like his opponents in that race.
