Almost done with my Lyman Great Plains 54 cal build.
    Only the barrel is left.

OK, the big warning billboard has to go,
    what else should go?
Or should I say, what should I leave?
My thought was taking out everything in first pic except the serial # on the far right
Then leaving the GREAT PLAINS RIFLE .54 and Lyman - Middletown CT, USA

I am on the fense about the Lyman - Middletown CT, USA though

is the etching light enough for you to do that? I would be afraid of rounding or otherwise changing the grain structure of the machining. Do you know someone that could do it with a mill rather than a file?

Also are you going to do a classic browning or blueing?

Cold Blue. Brownells Oxpho. I've already finished blued the parts that go onto the stock.

I'm going to do all the work myself. I did a test on the bottom and I can draw file then match the grain (looked good to me) on the rest of the barrel. If it looks ugly, I may have to sand the entire barrel. I'm ok with this being a learning experience, well cause it is. But I'm adamant about doing it myself.

Have you thought about stamping your name or initials and maybe a date. You are doing the work you should get some credit and it will mean more to the great grand children.

I like all the writing as is except for the nanny warning. Minus the warning, it should look great.

    Ok
I left the Sn and the GREAT PLAINS RIFLE .54 on the side.
    Took everything else off.
I have a punch set from work.
I going mark the twist rate Andy initials and build year for my kinfolk who one day inherit this

    Wow, that looks great.

I wouldn't have thought you could remove so much metal without messing up the contours and lines. It looks like you did a really good job.
