For those of you who visit Virginia, you may be familiar with Virginia code 18.2-308. That is the law that describes concealed carry, the permit process and some exemptions to the law.

For example, some examples of these exemptions under Virginia law are:

You could carry a concealed handgun without a permit if you were on your own property or in your own home.

You could carry a concealed handgun without a permit to or from a place of purchase or repair.

You could carry a concealed handgun without a permit going to or from an established shooting range.

Well, a year or two ago I looked at that and thought it odd that there was no exemption for carrying a concealed handgun to a firearms training class, where you could learn about your gun!

I made this suggestion to the Virginia Citizens Defense League, and this year they got a Senator to carry it forward and it passed!

Effective July 1, 2012, 18.2-308 of the Code of Virginia will read:

    B. This section shall not apply to......

    11. Any enrolled participant of a firearms training course who is at, or going to or from, a training location, provided that the weapons are unloaded and securely wrapped while being transported.

Kudos to the VCDL and the Senator for bringing this to fruition!

    Let's change some more laws!

You should move to MD (and bring your Senators with you!)
