  • So I have settled on building a 1911. I've been looking at 80% frames and there's so many to choose from. I've seen StealthArms, TM, etc. This is my first build and I do not want to go with some ragtag low quality frame.

Has anyone used the slide/frame kit from 1911 Builders?

Also I came across this group, they seem to do quality work but it would be nice if someone had experience with them before I throw money at them.

    Don't know about Vader..
    here is another place... http://www.range18.com/#!1911-80-frame-/c102o

TJ at 1911 builders is a great person to deal with, bought all the jigs from him
and what he didn't have from:
    http://www.matrixprecisionparts.com/catalog/
the "new" rail cutter for Steel / SS is great

picked up 2 STI kits a few frames, don't know about the one your looking at but between 1911 builders / range18 you can't go wrong build your first one, then just get a frame and slide, buy all your other stuff from Brownells or EGW
guns customize it to your "wants"

may also want to check around here:

Check out some of the posts by Mosinvirus on here
he's got me spending my $$, looking at a new barrel.

From what I have been reading / hearing TM is having a few issues with some frames (suppliers)

    Go for it...
and no I don't do this for a living...so there will be others I'm sure whom will chime in
    with more knowledge..hands on, mill..etc..

I think that is just a photo they used, don't think it is possible to sell you one with the rails cut without an FFL involved.

Interesting. I just looked at my frame again and there is about a silly millimeter indentation where the frame rail gets cut.

I'll look closer tonight. I just opened the box and snapped a pic last night... I'll give it a good fondling tonight! :innocent0

Have you decided what you will be using for the rest of the parts? I cannot seem to make up my mind.

I'm leaning towards a Long Slide configuration. I need to spread out the ordering of parts to keep costs below the threshold of the Mrs. :D

Looking at 6" SS Barrels and SS Slides. In keeping with the lack of S/N and graphics on the frame, I want to keep the look smooth, slick and streamlined. It looks like another $600+ in parts.

I just got my Stealth Arms 80% and will be looking for parts to finish the build. Is there any other source than eBay to find these? I want to do it like Boxcab and spread out purchase. Same reason too(wife)!

I've built two others with parts sourced from eBay. Looking for another source, thats all.

Welp, there is a small ledge...

The small ledge is not necessarily where the rail is cut, its where the frame is appropriately narrowed for the ear of the frame to fit in the notch in the slide.

The lower fatter part of the frame is excessively wide for fit into the slide.

$600 usually does it if you aren't doing something special like the long slide

Now that I've looked at mine with the jig attached I can see where the rail actually gets cut.

I really do need to start work on this project.

One I built my previous 100% frames up, I started with a Sarco parts kit that included everything but the frame. It is a good starting point, but they don't seem to have the entire parts kit any more and what they do have goes in and out of stock on a frequent basis. See

    http://www.e-sarcoinc.com/451911autobuildkitlessframeandslide.aspx

MidwayUSA and Brownells are hard to beat for parts,

    http://www.brownells.com/parts/1911/index.htm

For around $400 plus the frame, you can setup a nice 1911. The sky is the limit if you want something different.

Check out Caspian's Damascus slides and parts... ($1000 for 6" Slide!)
