Finally bought 1. A DPMS. It has a flat top with rails, but no sights, so first thing I need is sights. I plan to put a scope on it, and I have a VX-1Leopold I got off someone in trade, so would really like to mount it if possible. I understand I need a riser to work with flip up or stationary sights, but don't know crap about putting all the stuff together properly. Hell I don't know much about any of this, just how the danged AR rifles basically work and how to strip and clean them. LOL

I also have a stripped 5.56 lower and want to get a lower parts kit and assemble it. Again- no experience with that either. I am wanting to do an AR pistol with it. Eventually.

Sooo, let's start with the sights- something affordable, what brand, where to buy online? I was looking at Sportsman's Guide and Midway and there's cheap, a couple mid priced, and some $$ stuff. I am wanting to buy from an online dealer I can also score some .308 at for a good price. I bought a box of 20 when I bought the rifle in case I want to run out to my land ASAP and do a live fire check.

You can get Magpul MBUS sights pretty cheap, or spend a little more $$ and get the metal MBUS Pro flip ups... or there is YHM, LaRue... etc.. they are all good for flip up sights. If your primary intent is to scope it, the sights are really just backups and you don't have to spend the bank on them.

A Burris PEPR mount will not set you back too much $$ for a scope mount. Solid and reliable and available in QD if you want. ;)

Sight and scope-wise, the LR308 is the same as an AR-15. (Technically it is not an AR10, that would be an Armalite... lol)

Enjoy your new shootin iron!

Ok, 2nd issue ( btw thanks for the above) is there is no front sling attachment, but I see 2 small holes on the underside of the rail section in front of the hand guard. I can take a pic so you all know what/where. How would I attach a sling attachment?

Looks like I need some local AR junkie to help me hands on with some of this stuff LOL

A pic would help. It could be small tapped holes (like #8 or thereabouts), often used to attach a short pic rail section for a bipod or... some rails come with a larger hole tapped about 1/4" in diameter and you can screw a sling swivel stud right in. There are a lot of options. I have a couple rifles with add-on quick disconnects that allow you to attach a sling to the front of the rail. Remember though, slinging an AR is a little different than slinging a traditional rifle. Most carry it in front and the sling mounts are often on the left side of the rifle for a two point sling mount, or on the buffer tube plate for a single point sling. My 308's both have two point slings and I'll get a few pics for you later this evening to show some options.

I prefer to have the front sling mount on the left side of my handguard anyway (as opposed to underneath the FSP). I would buy something like this: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Daniel-Defense-Rail-Mount-QD-Swivel-Attachment-Poi-p/dd-30029.htm. Lots of different brands/styles out there...this is just an example.

    Primary Arms Mount:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KFJC5IQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00

That will work well with the VX-1. I think all models are 1" tubes, but i would double check your scope just to be sure.

I run this on my AR, with a fixed front sight and don't have an issue- at the lowest magnification I won't see the FSP unless I actively try looking for it. See below:

If you're using flip up sights for both your front and rear irons, you won't need a riser for the scope. Note how the rear flip up sight clears the scope with the primary arms mount.

My HBAR has the traditional sights and has a sling mount under the front sight, which I think is standard if you have the traditional front sight? I made a leather sling and attached it as you can see in this silly pic. I prefer this style to carry with a sling. So I want something I can attach in that spot. I will take some pics of the rifle and the 2 holes.

Yes, most traditional front sights have the attachment point as mentioned. Here are a few options, depending on the holes you have under the handguard. You may have to mount a pic rail section to it, as I do for both a backup front sight and a bipod underneath. I use a tactical bipod for bench shooting, but for hunting I often go with an older Harris bipod (I have two, medium and long) that allows more elevation and requires a standard sling swivel attachment point.

This adapter allows the Harris to mount to a typical underside pic rail section that has not sling stud... it is a little big for just a sling mount, but the bipod needs that extra meat to properly seat to the firearm.

Some rails like my YHM's allow for a sling stud to just be screwed into the hole on the underside...

I have a couple JP rails that have slots in them and come with attachments for a sling stud in any of the slots...

The smaller holes are often for mounting accessory pic rails like these (the heavy one on the bottom and the lighter one on top for a sight...

A smaller option for just adding a QD sling swivel... needs a pic rail to mount to.. (sorry, forgot where this one was before.. lol)

1st pic is gun porn lol. 2nd pic is the front underside with 2 small holes. 3rd, top rails. 4th pic shows the vx-1 in I'm guessing about the proper position?

The only real attachment point under a standard handguard configuration like that would be one that allows the use of the cooling holes in the handguard, such as this one, or similar....

    http://www.midwayusa.com/product/404111/harris-bipod-adapter-stud-swivel-5-ar-15-black

The two tapped holes are for the setscrews that secure that railed gas block to the barrel, so you can't use them.. already being used. Also, if you add pop up sights, you will need one for the front that allows for the reduced height of the gas block, as it is actually lower than the top rail on the receiver, and the front sight needs to be taller than a standard that would mount on a quad rail where the height is the same as the upper receiver rails.

Now, the scope needs to move back enough to allow BOTH sets of rings to mount to the top of the upper receiver and usually the rear edge of the scope will wind up very close to right over top of the charging handle at the very back of the receiver.. move it back a bit and you will be set... ;)

Ok, so how do you attach that to the hole(s)?

Are the Magpul MBUS sights still ok with that scope and the attachment that Notherealfranco's pic shows? Or do you have another scope mount attachment to recommend ( something also sold by Midway?).

And if the front sight needs to be higher than the rear, what to order? Is there a Magpul one that is higher or is there an adaptor to raise it?

You can tell I am lost on all this...lol

I like flip up sights on my AR's with scopes <= about 4X. Once you get into the higher powered (longer) scopes I'd forget the flip ups and just mount the scope. Adding a front (flip up) sight to a red dot or other low power scope can help you shoot longer distance if you setup the front sight to co-witness the red dot. In that case the red dot acts like your rear sight and the flip up is the front sight. If the red dot falls off then the front sight is better than nothing.

With the scope you pictured I think you will have trouble installing a rear flip up sight once you position the scope.

I want to hunt deer with it, so I need extra magnification, esp with my shitty eyes, which get shittier when its twilight and that 1/2 after sunset still left to hunt in, since the deer seem to come out then and not earlier. I prefer the thin scope reticle over a red dot. I got the vx1 in a trade (was on a muzzleloader initially but blocked easier access to cleaning it, so I took it off and use the hi-viz irons on it- which worked fine at 25 yards on a button buck at twilight, but was one hairy shot to me- though I actually hit the vitals- must have been the spirit of some dead hunter who helped me...). The vx-1 is a 200.00 scope, so it would be nice to actually use it. My 3rd deer (a big doe) I got with a loaner .270 with some old but quality scope on it sighted at 75 yds, and lo and behold that deer was at about 70 yards and I got a perfect dbl lung on her, she only went maybe 30 yards.

So, I should just go with the scope only and make sure it's mounted solidly and still properly sighted in just before deer season?

So should I get a scope mount like the Burris?
    http://www.midwayusa.com/product/15...ings-flattop-ar-15-matte?cm_vc=ProductFinding

I assume 1" permanent. How do I remove the scope from the rings it is currently on ( which was lock-tited)?

    Which lock-tite? LOL

    http://www.midwayusa.com/find?userSearchQuery=locktite+

Is a bore sighter really needed?

And lastly- that sling mount- can anyone find one that will work that Midway sells and is in stock?

BTW I know little about all this, but if you want to know all about fur trapping and taxidermy, ask me LOL.
