This might be a dumb question but you know what they say, the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask. My shotgun barrel says for 2 3/4 or 3 in shells. Would it be safe to fire 1 3/4 in shells?

Yes it would, however if it's a pump or semiauto it probably won't feed them properly.

To me at least, these are a novel solution in search of a problem.

Safe, yes. As also mentioned above, expect unreliable feeding in most shotguns save single shots and doubles. The last thing I'd want in a shotgun is iffy feeding/cycling.

I'm not sure where the problem comes in.

The bolt face and extractor will hold the spent shell in place until the spent shell comes into contact with the ejector.

Then out it flies with room to spare.

Here's an example from Aguila and Nobel Sports makes some short 12 ga rounds too, as I recall 2 or 2.25 inches.

I've used these in a SxS but never tried them in a pump myself.

As already posted, the flares will be fine and safe enough to shoot if the gun is in good shape. Although they may or may not feed smoothly, once they chamber they'll be OK.

The warnings with shotgun ammo have to do with the dangers of exceeding the rated shell length. One can safely shoot shorter shells, but shells longer than those listed can develop high pressure due to insufficient space to unfold and can be very dangerous to fire.

FWIW, I've shot the Aquila 1-3/4" slugs and they're pathetically underpowered and hardly resemble most folks idea of the power of a "12 gauge slug". At 50 yards, they hit two feet lower than real shotgun slugs. They will not feed in my 870s.
