Unless you have practiced A LOT or were born in the Philippines, you cannot open a butterfly knife any faster than a pen knife. Now I know a few guys that were born in the Philippines that can open them faster than you can open a switchblade.
    IMHO.
I can open a pen knife very fast but I can open a balisong a little faster. I used to teach people how to use them when I came here back in the 70's (I was involved heavily in martial arts then) (I was also stationed in the Philippines while in the Navy). The flashy movie way is not the fastest way to open a balisong no matter how good you think you are. The way I taught people, I can open it in a hair under 1 second. There is also a .5 second emergency mode. I stopped carrying one when the law became somewhat ambiguous about definitions. Now I either carry an assisted opening blade or a "pen" knife both with with glass breakers and seat belt cutters for "respectability". I have the pen knike setup so I can open it in about .6 seconds.
Switchblades, daggers (double edged blades are a no-no, as that is the definition of a dirk), and any knife that ejects the blade as a missile except for LEOs. Those are the ones I know for sure. I don't carry anything that an LEO can decide on his own it might be illegal. Even if he turns out to be wrong.

I carry A Balisong or two everyday in Maryland and treat it as a legal knife, I carry it for Work and Fun.
It is not a Gravity knife , it is not a Switchblade .. By Maryland's definition I consider it a Pen knife, and will defend my right to carry it.
