I have had one in .357 since the mid 90's. Absolutely my favorite revolver of all time. I tried the Hogue grips and they did interfere with my speed loader so I switched back to the factory grips. Concealable, powerful, and extremely well built. You cannot go wrong with the SP101.

Ok gun, larger than the S&W J frame but the action is not as smooth.

A better choice for CCW is the Ruger LCR. It is lighter, more concealable, the action is smoother and the grip works well ( Hogue Tamer) to absorb recoil.

It will jump out of your hand if you shoot .357's though.

Wife has the LCR in .38+P and I have the SP101 .357 mag. Using +p in both I find the LCR to be more accurate (10 yds). I am getting a new Hogue grip for the SP101 and possibly trigger work done.

It was my first firearm when I got into it in June 2009. It's a handful for a newbie, but very shootable now that I'm broken-in :)

It's the .357 2.25". I have small hands that the large Hogue grip took away being able to get a good grip on the gun. I do better with the original grip. If you get one and need the houge grip let me know.

I keep it loaded with .357 Golden Sabre 124gr JHP. It's a low-flash recipe and sleeps under a pillow at night.

I appreciate all the info, I am looking at the 3" barrel. This has to be comfortable for the wife as well so anything to lessen the kick and make it more accurate for her will be a help. Although she says she just wants to shoot 38's and maybe try a couple 357 rounds I already know what that means. Yes, it means a lot 357 after a few 38's :lol2:. But Who's complaining, I get to buy more 357....:innocent0

I have the 2.25" .357. It's a solid revolver all around. If you're concerned about accuracy beyond 10 to 15 yards, get one with a longer barrel. Within 10 yards, mine is very fast and accurate in double action with both calibers.

    My newest SP101 Model 5720

My first purchase with the ridiculous HQL is another Ruger SP101. Nearly 20 years ago I got my first SP101 (Model 5719 w/ 3 inch barrel). This time I opted for the Model 5720 which is the spurless hammer model designed for concealed carry with the 2.25 inch barrel. I looked at the LCR but in comparison it felt cheap and certainly did not feel like it could hold up to a steady stream of .357 like the SP101 does. Special thanks to my wife who at our wedding announced I can buy anything gun related I want with no restrictions from then on. In another thread I said I have the best woman and she proves it yet again. Also thanks to Constitutional Firearms for helping me get it.

I read your post again. I misunderstood what you said.:o

    Carry on, guys. :)

    Thanks "Grand PU-BAH".

I have a 3-1/16" from back in 1997. Loved it then loved it. Love it now. I got another in 2.25" this summer along with a 6"GP100. I love Ruger revolvers and handguns in general.

The SP101 is very well made and robust. I like the fact that it does not us any sideplates and the plunger is not part of he lckng mechanism. The strongest revolvers made, which allows it to shoot hotter loads than any other manufacturers.

Does the "spurless hammer" model have the same trigger pull as the standard model? It has a fairly long and heavy pull in double action.

Yes, same heavy pull. I bought the spurless hammer model for concealed carry and it forces me to practice that way and hopefully get better/faster in double action.

When I originally bought mine, and then a second for a family member a year later, back in the late 90's, I got them both new for $325. At the Timonium show yesterday I saw one marked $579.

Update: I just saw one in Free State (3 1/16" barrel) marked $679:shocked4:

Update No.2: Free State just posted in #51 below that it was incorrectly marked and is now marked $559!

Worth every penny. By far the sturdiest small revolver built anywhere.

I have a 3" sp101 with about 250 or so rounds through it. I have also dry fired it at least a 1000 times. My god that trigger is stiff and a long pull. Any suggestions?
Also, I have an LCR in .357 and it's a neat gun. My gf is very good with it!

That's ridiculous. I bought mine for $495 from The Gun Shop in Essex. Now this was December 2012 a week before Newtown, but still. That Freestate price is insane.

They're great, the only problem I have with them is that the .22LR version has a REAL heavy trigger, but I guess that's for reliability's sake.

    The .357 is wunnerful

I was looking at these yesterday. The SP101 is a great little gun, all steel with a very nice DA trigger, even if it is not a Smith! But under a 4 inch barrel on a .357 Magnum does not make much sense. The new model offers a barrel just over 4" with a fiber optic sight. With 3 inches, a lot of your powder goes to waste and you lose velocity. I have a couple Blackhawks and you can never go wrong with a Ruger. They will last much longer than a life time if properly cared for.

The SP could easily be anyone's last revolver because it's built like a tank. However, I prefer the concealed hammer of the LCR that would allow shooting it from a pocket or from under a blanket without interference.
