It's not a done deal by any means.

"my proposal is a common-sense approach" aaargh....

    I like the quote:
"the military currently spends about $2 per year just to store 100,000 1911’s that are surplus to the current needs of the ARmy."

that seems like a pretty good deal for storage to me...
maybe they meant per gun... :)

I will gladly store all of those for less than $2 per year. In fact, I'll pay them $2 per year.

I tried, but I am unable to connect to CMP's website at the moment.

    thecmp.org

If you can get to the website they have a page that shows the specific eligibility requirements.

In general, you need to prove eligibility by being active/retired/former military (DD-214), engaged in some type of responsible firearm activity.

Most join GCA (Garand Collectors Association), thegca.org .

The biggest gripe I see out of people wanting to purchase a CMP firearm is getting their initial order "notarized". I go to my local bank/credit union where they notarize my order form for free.

Also you need to have patience it you place an order. Some items are in short supply and they may not ship for months once you place an order. No worries, you won't be charged for your order until about a week before shipment.

Also no Firearm orders via the website! Firearms required hardcopy orders with "wet"/notarized signature (prove who you are) placed through the mail, no faxing, no e-mails, no pdf's. You still have to pass the NICS check and you order will be processed in the order it was received. A first in, first out scenario. All orders received on Monday will be filled, before Tuesdays orders will be processed... generally ;).

The CMP website has a forum (like MDshooters) where the ordering process in covered in GREAT detail. Take some time and read through the post with an hour you will be an old hand on how the process works.

CMP has some of the best customer service in the nation. Most companies could use their process as a training tool to support their customer base. :D

Believe it when I see it. Wonder how many they are realistically getting, presumption would be that if its under a few thousand per year they'll go to auction. No deals there.

"This provision, which the Army has said it does not want or need, could potentially put nearly 100,000 untraceable .45-caliber military-grade handguns on our streets," the spokesman, Michael Amato, said in an email. "This provision is an unnecessary risk."

The Army noted in its opposition that the Department of Justice has tracked an average of nearly 1,800 Colt .45s being used in crimes every year over the last decade, including a significant but unspecified number of those guns that were originally military surplus.

HOLY $hit, man. I get so damned fuming mad when I read ignorant crap like this.

"untraceable" firearms??? Like they don't have a serial number? false
Like they are just sold to anyone? false
Like they don't go through GREAT lengths to verify a persons identity before selling? false

I don't wanna live here anymore.

If you have high blood pressure, I wouldn't read that Huffington post link in the Garandthumb article above.

    I wish I hadn't, I'm still pissed off.

Not only a dupe but the news article is months out of date.

    House passed the amendment.

    Senate stripped the amendment.

Bill is back in the house for reconciliation.

Currently not in the bill. That may change....

    No amendment no sales.

    Just posted on the Fbook

    Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP)

An update on the 1911’s…IT HAS PASSED THE SENATE!
The legislation has passed both the House and Senate. It will now head to the President’s desk for signature. If signed, we will meet with Army to develop procedures. All of this will take time. We have no further information. When information becomes available we will communicate with our customers.
    Thank you,
