My wife and I are heading to the midwest to visit family in a few weeks. We wanted a little time to ourselves, so we're going to leave a day early and spend a couple of nights at a B&B in Cumberland before continuing on. It's a convenient 2 hour-or-so drive from home after work, and it's on the way.

We'll be arriving on a Thursday evening, leaving on a Saturday morning. Things to drive to are ok, but walking is better (we'll be doing another 8 hours or so of driving on Saturday, so, meh.)

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks!

(edit to add... we're in decent shape, wife is used to being on her feet all day so long walks are fine, but she has some back issues so no off-road hiking, up-and-down stuff.)

Dinner at Savage River Lodge! Incredible food and service. They also have lodging and access to park land hiking trails. No T.V. internet unless your in the main lodge, it's a great way to take a break my wife and I have stayed there several times.

If trains interest you there is the steam locomotive that runs from Cumberland to Frostburg. It's a nice trip but better in the fall when the leaves change.

It's the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Runs to Frostburg and back on the old Western Maryland tracks and turns on the turntable (a must see).

The WMSR had a deal where you could ride on the 734 (steam loco) but I don't see anything on the web site about it right now. My daughter and I rode several years ago, and I think I paid $75 a person for it.
They have a lot of stuff going on there this year. You should look at the web site.
The 734 will be put out of service soon for FRA inspections.
The railroad is now in possession of the C&O 1309 (from the B&O Railroad Museum), which is a much larger steam locomotive. It is being restored at this time and should be running by next fall.

    bullfrog,

you don't say when you are coming thru but -

1 - if the train does not appeal, and you are interested in the C & O canal in any way, there is a walking . biking path that has access in downtown Cumberland right at the old WMSR station. You can walk either direction and it is mostly level near town. http://www.atatrail.org/

You may also want to look at renting a bike for a few hours at Cumberland Trail Connection http://www.ctcbikes.com/ for the canal trail.

2 - There is usually live entertainment on the mall downtown on Friday nites. Different venue each weekend until the cold weather hits. http://www.downtowncumberland.com/w...omesalivescheduleweb.pdf#cumberlandcomesalive

3 - maybe a show at the Cumberland or Embassy theatres. Cumberland does live shows several times a year. Embassy shows old movies once in a while.

    4- Saville art gallery - downtown. http://www.alleganyartscouncil.org/

5- lots of small antique-y type shops on the mall. A few local artists also display wares in the variety of store windows downtown.

Most of this is concentrated near downtown Cumberland and the pedestrian mall. There is also LaVale nearby which is where many of the chain eateries are located sprinkled in with some decent locally owned restaurants.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip!

I think I would drive a bit further west and stay at Deep Creek.

Go 20 minutes west to Deep Creek Lake.

Heh... come on guys... this is almost like:

Question: Should I use a 1:7 or 1:9 barrel for my AR build?
Answer: Neither, you should buy an AK.

    ;)

Seriously, all the responses are appreciated, even these two... if this were a destination, I would certainly pick Deep Creek Lake over Cumberland. We've stayed at a BnB there a few years ago, and probably will again soon, but like I said in the OP this is a short stop during a road trip to spend some quiet time together. Not looking for a tourist destination, or lots of day long activities; just a short walk, maybe a historic site or two, dinner.

    Thanks again to all.

You can also stay at one of the canal lock houses, for a fee. I have never done it....can't talk my wife into it.

The downtown area is a bit depressed business wise, but it is pretty. Beautiful architecture there.
