I couldnt think of a good reason to do that. Plus with so many calibers where would you start.

Idk in case theres another ammo scare and you get a firearm in a caliber you didn't previously have, or in case SHTF and other people have guns for those calibers you can give em.

I'm not really the SHTF preparation type, but I understand some are. If I were, I'd probably want 9/40/45/556/308/762x51/545x39/762x39/22lr/30-06/270.

It's too expensive to prep like that though, even if I were so inclined. I just add to my ammo pile when I have the funds.

    Edit: And 12GA. Big one.

Is 4000 rounds of 5.56, 1000 of .45, 1000 of .40, 1000 rounds of 12 ga. 00, and 500 12 ga slugs enough for a stockpile? Personally, I have stopped shooting till I re-stock. I'm just using the miscellaneous target loads scattered around as I stumble across them. Thank god I have enough brass and powder to load for the bolt guns!

Its my general rule of thumb to have 1000 of everything I own. 9, 45, 556, 762-51, 22.

Anything over that I can take to the range.

    That's a good start! I have 2000 rounds of 5.56, 2000+ of 5.45, 8 or 900 of .40, 400 9mm, 1100 10mm, 300 .303, 200 7.62x54R, 500 7.62x39, 500 .45 Colt, 800 .357, 300 .38s, 1500 7.62 NATO, 2000+ .22 LR, 400 7mm-08, 500 30-06, and 100 300 WinMag. I have no idea how many shotgun shells I have, and I have rounds in 32-20 and .32 Magnum even though I don't have any guns in that caliber. Oh, 250 7.62x45s. I've got components for another 1500 30-06 and 350 of the WinMags. That's off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure I have more ammo here somewhere.

Thank god I don't have that many caliber's. I try to have two of each supported caliber, preferably they can share mags. All bolt guns are hand loaded and I have not been stockpiled properly. I need to get working on that.

I read a post a while ago that made sense about buying twice as much as ammo as you shoot. Combining that idea with case quantity discount has helped me start building a decent amount. Or a completely rediculous amount if you ask the wife!

    That's why I dumped the wife... :lol2:

Seriously, I shoot more .40 than anything, and I cast and reload for it. Over a grand in the cabinet, and I press a li'l more up here and there.

I need more ammo cans. I snagged a huge 20mm can at the Chantilly show, but it was impossible to get more cans since I was by myself with no cart. Getting stuff then schlepping it out to the truck on the other side of the parking lot then coming back isn't going to work if you have time constraints.

Are ammo cans the best storage method if I buy a bulk box with them shipped in cardboard? Anything needed to put in them to prevent spoiling if there is such a thing? Like humidity damage??

Dessicant packs work great. Rice works but I don't want mice or other rodents sniffing my stockpile.

I'm a fan of ammo cans and desicant.

For 5.56 I pack 920 rounds (in 20 round carboard boxes) into a 50 cal ammo can. If you pack them just right they all fit.

If you buy a case, you can pack 920 and shoot the 80 that dont fit. it's win win!

You guys have made me realize I'm wasting a wonderful resource at work. I'm at a pharmacy, and on truck days, I probably throw more than 100+ of those little desiccant things away, I'm gonna start saving them, and throw them in my ammo cans.
