Something I was talking about with a friend yesterday, is there an actual statistic, if one even exists, of crimes committed by persons who use their legally carried firearms to commit the crime? I'm not talking about they have the weapon on them when they do something stupid, I mean like actually using the firearm they carry to commit robbery, murder, ect.

Just something I wondered because you always see how a FEW police and the media act like a person legally carrying is about to go shoot up a school or something

I'd imagine the number is low, if there even is one, but there's always stupid people who do stupid things

I looked it up for a paper a few months ago, but I don't remember the figures. The rate of licensees using their weapon to commit a crime is really low. The rate of licensees committing other crimes is also really low. Statistically, licensees are better behaved than police in terms of crimes committed.

Here are a few links from some quick searching.

That's exactly what I would assume. I feel 99% of people who legally carry understand the responsibilities that come with it and don't go looking for stupid situations to put themselves in

Also it's because that those who have concealed carry licenses generally do not come from a demographic that is likely to commit crime or even to be the victim of one. Concealed carry licensees are largely middle aged white males.

I believe it was the Texas study that pointed out that when a concealed carry licensee commits a crime, it's generally something with low prevalence such as a white collar crime or sexual offense and not a high prevalence, street crime such as burglary or robbery.

So that statistically, if we issue CCW permits to the entire population of the state, crime will fall to zero.
