Good price but a few things make me hesitant

    1. I have read that the 1:9 twist is not enough to stabilize the 5.45 which results in a lot of keyholing. Ballistic Advantage makes their barrels 1:8 for that reason. I will try to find the source of where I read that...

    2. Who is Alpha Shooting Sports and how long have they made AR components?

Like I said, damn good price though.

Any other more well known ar uppers available in the 5.45 set up?

Once the surplus 5.45 totally dries up the economic argument for this caliber goes away. The ammo is pretty much gone. You can still buy commercial (about the same $$'s as 7.62x39) and hopefully brass and bullet heads will become more common.

I have the S&W and never even got the chance to shoot it! At least I have a decent stock of ammo to draw upon.

Considering the BATFE's ban on importation of a lot of 5.45x39 ammo
They banned Russian-made 7N6. All of the commercial stuff is fine for now. And while 7N6 was a hell of a deal, I don't see anyone writing off 5.56x45 because there's no 7N6 equivalent for it, and 7.62x39 survived a similar ban just fine.

I would be very hesitant to consider purchasing anything in this caliber.
It is still a terrific hedge against ammo shortages. I'd probably rethink an AK-74, but a 5.45x39 AR upper? Still a good idea to have around, even if it's just sitting on the shelf most of the time.

After 7.62x25 dried up, Tokerevs and CZ-52s aren't nearly as much fun to shoot.
Well, they're more expensive to shoot, but I'd argue just as fun. Real problem is that commercial 7.62x25 is like double the price of 9mm, which isn't the case for the 5.56x45/5.45x39/7.62x39 comparison.

x2. Commercial 5.45 is still 1/3 cheaper than 5.56 and plenty is still being made. $0.20/rd didn't spell the demise of AK47s so it wont be for the 74 either. Shoot it!

In my eyes, this equals "not as much fun to shoot". 1260 rounds of 7.62x25 for $89 made my CZ-52 a blast to shoot (pun intended). $22 for 50rds- notsomuch.

I was unaware commercial 5.45x39 was so affordable.

FYI, Grafs carries brass reloadable PPU for $15.80/50 (OOS at the moment but I've bought a bunch this year.) Yes, not the good old days of surplus but still only about halfway between 9mm and 45ACP pricewise.
