This is work for those with flexible schedules or those who need to do something while looking for work in the meanwhile. I get nothing from this other than to share what I've discovered myself and is fun to do on the side also.

Believe it or not, the DC area is one of the big areas for TV production and commercials and it's not that hard to get temp jobs playing extras (ignore any offers that require you to pay any money to do this as they are rip-offs).

My wife and I started to do this as a part time thing and may end up doing this as a retirement jobs as they are a bunch of fun. We've now been in a half-dozen of various episodes on Discovery ID Channel. My first job (with no experience at all) was to portray a priest in an episode of "Southern Fried Homicide" (episode 6 aired July 10). The rest of what we've filmed on will air in September and October.

But the reason for the post today, is that there is a job to be in a commercial for a firearms dealer: Benelli USA

This is the link for the ad: On-camera talent wanted for professional video (Washington, DC)

The big deal with these is to get your photos as described. I would recommend having them done outside and look your best. Perhaps they may want a bit more experience than nothing for this one, but you have to start somewhere. I would include that you are vary familiar with firearms.

The following ads are easier to get when starting off:
There is a lot of garbage on craigslist but the stuff with Discovery ID on it or from Sirens Media is legit. (most of our work has been with Sirens Media)

Extras Needed Aug. 15-17; Aug. 19-22 for Discovery ID (DMV)
OPEN CALL/SUBMIT for AUDITIONS/EXTRAS for ID NETWORK (DMV)
Detectives and Male Extras Aug. 15-17 for Discovery ID (DMV)

When I respond, i just gave them my name (First last), age, height, weight (contact number, email address) add any comments or experience if any and then attach photos and that's it.

Most of the stuff is filmed within 1 hour of DC Metro, including surprisingly a lot in Frederick, Maryland.

I can continue this discussion like what happens if you get picked, what to expect, how it works on set etc.

what times of the day do they usually do this? i'm asking because i work 1st shift

Usually daytime work areas, but this is the media business and it has it's own rules. A 'Day' is 12 hours, but it can start whenever the director wants (scheduled ahead of time). I've also been in and out in a couple of hours. There is a lot of hurry up and wait, but that's show biz.

Most of the time it will be during the day time, although I have done several in the evening. One was an office scene where they rented someones office and it was shot from 6pm til 2am and included dinner (there are rules when they have to feed you). I did another that was at a diner in the evening also.

Btw the office scene was a recreation of the shooting that occurred in Atlanta where the guy shot up a trading office around 1999, made national news at the time. EDIT: just found airtime for this episode "Who the Bleep..." on Investigation Discovery on Sept 28, 9pm

My best advice is to learn as much about the role as you can and listen to direction. The better you listen and react, the more likely you will be picked.
If you don't have a headshot, have someone take a flattering photo of you with a good camera in decent lighting. Dress for the part.

Just look at it all as a job interview where the boss is already putting you to work.

They need all types depending on show. Goto craigslist for washington dc area and go to 'Gigs' then Talent section, ignore the all the porno stuff. I search for 'Extras', 'Actor', 'Actors', 'Casting'. If it's your first time, start with the 'extras' jobs.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, get yourself a good headshot taken outside with your face well lit. While you are at it, have a full body one also. Make sure they aren't more than 500k each in size. You don't need to say much in the response, just your name, age, height and weight and contact (email and phone number) and then attach your 2 photos. I usually copy their subject line as my email subject but sometimes they want something special so look. Also confirm your availability for the dates specified.

They are always looking for new faces as they can't use you for more than one episode for a series. So I've done 'Deadly Affairs', 'Who the bleep...', 'Southern Fried Homicide', 'When Ghosts attack', and today did 'Evil twins' so I can't do any more in those series. During todays shoot with my wife, when of the assistant produces noticed that my wife was perfect for another show that shoots next week, but because it's more of a major part she has to go audition for it (unless you have acting experience, don't start with these). BTW 2 months ago, my wife would never have even considered getting in front of the camera but now she is going for an audition! It's really not that hard, and don't think you aren't good enough because you mostly likely are. Remember these are crime recreations and there are all sorts of real looking people that were involved, whether as victim, or detectives, neighbors, friends etc

I was in the building next to the guy in Atlanta at that time (in a traders office) - I walked out to my car, got out of the parking lot, heard the shots, saw all the cops waiting on the bridges looking down at the cars going by (he was traveling on the same roads going my way) - really creepy that day - missed it by 60 seconds.

As I remember, he pulled off one of the exits and took himself out.

what does "submit reel or video" really mean?

Once you have been on a couple of shows, you take clips from them and put them together and create an 'Actors' reel which show cases your work.

Almost anytime you do work, you can get a DVD of what you did (after the show airs).

Generally you start it off with your photo and contact info for about 5-10 seconds then segments of your best work for a total of not more the 3-5 minutes.

Then you upload it on youtube (you can keep the link private) and then submit the link.

But this is done after you have done some work and it has aired.
