What kind of training do you guys get with regards to what the laws are? It would seem to me if you are going to enforce the law, you need to know it. If you pull someone over who is from another State and he has a loaded handgun in the glove compartment, will you let him go because "that's the norm" where he's from? If I can't plead ignorance, I don't expect the police to be able to do so. Just my POV.

When a patient comes to see you do you know every illness and treatment right off the top of your head or do you talk to co-workers and read books or articles on the illness or treatment? Maybe even refer them to a specialist a time or two?

The firearm laws in MD are so confusing and most police officers rarely come across them being legally transported in this state unless they are in the rural area during hunting season.

I don't expect every officer on the street to have endless knowledge of every crime. I do expect them to know enough to seek guidance or glance at one of the books/resources offered to them prior to violating anyone's rights. It sounds like in this case that is what happened.

If MD legislators would write laws that the judges, lawyers, and common folk could understand I'd expect a bit more of the police.

Of course folks on a gun forum expect the police to know all the gun laws off the top of their head. Add in that the actual laws make no sense what so ever and it puts the street cop in a tough spot.

Sometimes you just have to know enough to know you don't know enough...seems like that was the case here.

Made sense if they were fishing. Just because you don't like the question or think its ignorant does not mean they don't know what they are doing.
Exactly and I suspect that they will 'take advantage' of any citizen that is not intimately familiar with the recent myriad of gun laws and nuances...cover your butt, be respectful and give up nothing.. lol

He's from MOCO and probably was stopped IN MOCO. You expected what - violins and flowers when they stopped you? This reminds me of the guy from FLA who was jacked up by the Tunnel Rats for the offense of driving in public in Maryland.

Just a little fishing expedition to see what we can come up with. Ball busting at no extra cost. Well, just a little - salary for five onlookers. And LOTS of report entries for ALCON.

The sad part is that we pay for this BS every Spring.

That was an MSP stop. Last time I looked the MSP was the licensing authority in Maryland. This was either straight up ball breaking or incompetent training on MSP's end. We should not have to travel with a lawyer in the trunk (although I prefer a Trunk Monkey).

if you have the spare time and patience, refuse to speak to them without a lawyer.

When asked about guns in vehicle, my standard response is to ask them if they pulled me over for having guns in the vehicle (whether I do or not). The police have a lot of leeway, especially in Maryland/DC/NOVA, to harrass you. A couple of hours spent in a competent lawyer's office with a list of prepared questions/general what-if scenarios is well worth whatever he/she charges. You will be much better prepared to deal with any encroachments on your rights and be ready and able to document (and later have your lawyer act upon) any procedural or legal violations on the part of the officers.

Damned good eyesight to see that crack in your windshield. Where they behind you?

Glad it ended well (or at least better than it could have) and you don't have to get into a court battle. I've often wondered what I would do if pulled over and questioned. I keep my firearms in a case and out of sight in the trunk if possible. (My long guns, not so much.)

I think if you are going to enforce the laws you should have some idea about the larger aspects of it. To use your analogy, when a patient comes to see me about ass pain, I don't do an MRI of the brain. I form a differential diagnosis (all of the things it COULD be), ask questions to narrow it down. Do a physical exam to narrow it down a bit more, then treat, refer for testing or to a specialist. I don't tell people they have cancer when they have a sebaceous cyst.

Not knowing the laws, or having a completely wrong impression of what the laws are can really cause a citizen a lot of problems. Money hiring a lawyer, time off work etc. That is not fair. Asking someone for their gun license is kind of a big "I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about". That's just sloppy.

I am not part of the anti-cop contingent here. I tend to support LEO and believe that the vast majority of them are good people and not out to make life difficult for anyone. They are just doing their jobs. I have a job where I am expected to be sharp and accurate all the time. I think other people should do their jobs with the same attitude. That is just my opinion.

I imagine it is hard to keep up with all the ******** daily changes in firearms law, especially if the officers In Service training is about use of cell phone cameras because sidewalk attorneys love starting shit and posting it on youtube.

It did happen yesterday, approximately 1030am. They asked because the case is large and was in plain sight. I definitely do not have a problem with them asking as I have nothing to hide. But damn if I was going to give them any more info than that. It would not be the 1st time I called the barracks. I actually initiated an investigation into a trooper who gave me lip after blowing my doors off doing 100 plus with no lights and sirens and didn't like me flashing him. Investigation started with an email to MSP head of OIA and ended with the Barrack LT at my house getting my side of the story. I think I will contact them and discuss. Their lack of training will get someone hurt legally, financially, and or physically at some point in time.

JMHO, I would not carry firearms in a case in the back seat. ONLY in the trunk, and trunk locked.

2 Troopers in car, 1 I believe is a rookie, more latter. SOP they come up on both sides of car peering in the windows, case is in plain sight in the back seat.

Plan D? Not worth the hassle.
    Where did this come from?

More than one source... I have personal knowledge of several traffic stops where " Do you know why I stopped you " became " Do you have any firearms in the car ". One was working for an ffl and transporting under that license...

That and my recognition of NYPD probing methods sets off my radar.. others tell similar stories. Hard to say if anyone will kiss and tell. But its enough for me to act on.

To risky to play with. FOPA all the way no stops in Md. Grey man.

There may be case law soon --then we will know..

Never travel to the liberal areas anyway. But I expect lots of activity on the boarders...

I believe this is part of their training, they don't have a problem asking off the wall questions, it is for the purpose of gauging your response.

Teratos - Your thoughts are on point. If you dont know the law you have no business trying to enforce whatever it is you think you know. In any job you should apply yourself 100%, this is especially true when your actions impact other peoples lives.

One of our LEO's said the MSP firearms database is available to LEO data terminals. C & C long guns won't be in it. For now anyway

Seemingly unpleasant but no laws were broken by anyone that I can see.

    IANAL
