I wonder what the match rate would be on a gun 500 rounds later

These cases are all from brand new guns with only factory test firing correct?

You are absolutely correct in your thinking. The information I am trying to get from a co-sponsor of the bill, was regarding a "test" case where a known firearm was used and compared a spent shell from a current firing to the one on file. They could not match the two. They then fired a second round. The two casings, which were fired one right after the other, could not be matched to each other! This was done by the MSP (I believe).

It sounds like this program is like similar programs, good intentions but terrible implementation and an inconvenience on law abiding gun owners.

Or bad intentions meant to make lawful gun ownership more costly and burdensome disguised as "common sense crime fighting tools"

So what is to stop a criminal scooping up brass at a range and seed the crime site with a few more casings. Hell just keep a pocket of 50 spent shells and if you got to shoot, just toss all of them and let MSP have lots of fun.

This examines the spent case, not the bullet.

Changing the barrel would do nothing, this is about the firing pin imprint on the primer which, even with the same firing pin, is less consistent than rifling marks on bullets.

Inconsistent action on the trigger, spring tension on the firing pin, normal wear on the pin, bolt face, barrel breech, dirt in the firing pin channel and different ammo can all make a later shell different from the retained exemplar.

The concept itself is flawed, not just the program.

Changing the barrel could change the case. Like switching a .40 barrel to a .357 sig barrel. This changes the whole caliber that MSP would be looking at.

There is definitely an element of that in every piece of legislation and regulation.

No where else in the country is a system like this used, or has ever been successful. Maryland jumped in with both feet and failed miserably. Pure science fiction.

It's because Maryland is one of the few elite, wealthy states with unlimited budget surpluses to enact and implement experimental cutting edge technology and avant garde regulatory schemes. :sarcasm:

A criminal could keep a handful of discarded, same caliber cases from the local range and throw them around the crime scene before he leaves. Just hope they're not yours if the machine actually does get a hit.

Mr H. Your question, "what machine?" Is spot on. It illustrates our biggest problem. Detailed information has been provided about this defunct program. Yet we fail to explore that information because there is so much jibber jabber and erroneous, self interpretation, that no one can narrow down the facts. Please seek to educate yourself on these topics. The more intelligent we are, the better prepared we are to speak to legislators. Mr H, thanks to you for all the work you so to educate everyone.

And used guns are exempt. How many criminals do you think buy brand new guns? I guess "buy brand new" is a poor choice of words.

So are guns that are brought into the state when you move here and become a resident.

Al good points to address in this sessions testimony. Since everyone is looking for fiscal accountability let's start here!! It has been said a multitude of times last session how can you solve a crime when you no longer have the damn machine to do it??????

It's time we really started pushing this and may other other subjects.

Plan D? Not worth the hassle.
    No its not that bad.

Its saying put up or shut up.. since a funded program would prove that match would never hold up under the federal rules of evidence it would be a win for us the first time the state looses on appeal for reversible error..

They know this.. and that's why they will never fund it

This is not a bad editorial for us.
