    Hey everyone-

I am looking to get into archery. I'm not a hunter. I am interested in targets. My question is, what is the difference between a hunting bow as opposed to one for 3D versus one for paper targets? I'm not looking for bow recommendations here. There are a million threads already out there for that. I am looking for the distinctions between the hunting VS. target bows.

    Thanks!

In general serious target bows such as a HOYT ultratech are generally Long bows and are outfitted with a competition target sight such as a sure loc contender. These bows generally have a longer distance between cams and often have many stabilizing weights to help stabilize the bow.

3-d bows generally are geared toward hunting type bows. 3-d involves shooting animal targets on a course from varying yardages and varying light condition from various angles and elevations.

Hunting bows are the most common types of compound bows and generally have a much shorter distance from cam to cam. This is because bows must be shot from varying elevations, angle and the need for mobility is of great importance. This especially holds true when hunting from a tree stand. Most hunting and 3-d bows usually have a fibre optic multi pin sight such as the Tru Glo Brite Site Xtreme, 3 Pin fibre optic sight.

In general longer bows add to better stability whereas hunting bows generally provide a shorter more manageable package for mobility.

Consider what type of bow you are interested in, compounds or traditional, i.e. longbows and recurves. Traditional bows may be more of a challenge to shoot accurately and more rewarding. Plus it is much easier to work on your longbow or recurve. Compounds are more complex and you will need to buy the necessary equipment or take it to a qualified tech to have it tuned, repaired, etc.
