I think you should skip the AK and get one of these:

Expensive? Yeah. Sensible? No. But SBR it and you'll be the koolest kat in town with the biggest smile!

A PTR32 is fighting an Evo scorpion for the top of the list!

Any suggestions for mags? I'm overwhelmed with options and I'm looking to buy in bulk. Anybody use the Korean made 20 rounders that run $9 a mag? I'd prefer to stay at 20 rounds or higher.

This thread is making me really sad I still live in the PRM. I think my first purchase if/when I move back to Free America will be an AK.

I'm not sure about the serial #'s. Get European steel surplus mags, they're affordable and reliable. If they're good enough for the military they're good enough for you. Korean AK mags are junk.

On the magazine front, my choices would:
    • Real-deal Hungarian 20rd magazines
    • Euro steel magazines - I'd avoid the BHO mags, they apparently are wonky in some guns
    • Magpul M3 when they come out

Those tanker mags and magpul's are stupid expensive. I'll probably pick some up but I refuse to be happy about it!

The Hungarians 20's were cheap when 20 round mags were still Md legal. CFS had them for like $30-40 for 3 in a mag pouch. Long gone are those day, they're fetching a premium now. I really like them for the range and they look great in my Hungarian AK's. :)

I agree. OP, there's also 5 and 10rd mags available.
10 rounders might be plausible because of the bench but I'd really like to stick to 20 rounds and up. The low cap mags are barely cheaper than standard cap.

Yesterday was AK day! I picked her up and I have a couple lingering questions.

    1. I still can't figure out where this gun originated. There's no KBI import mark but it has a KBI serial number. I know arsenal imported receivers and used Polish kits to finish them but they had different serials and had SSR stamped on them. It has no import markings that I can find. Could there be markings under the hand guards?

    2. Is it normal for eastern European mags to wobble but not pmags?

    3. Is the gas tube short or long? I'm assuming long since it's fairly close to the FSB.

Yes wobbly mags are ok as long as they work. Some mags are tight some sloppy as heck
