    SBR? Reflex sight.
Carbine in 5.56/7.62/.300? 1-X scope or fixed compact scope (ie, ACOG or PA Prism)
Carbine in some oddball caliber? Reflex sight w/ magnifier.
    Rifle? Scope.

As for pricing, here's the heuristic:
Range toy? Primary Arms non-Advanced line.
    Serious combat rifle? Aimpoint/Eotech/Trijicon/Meprolight.
In-between? Burris, Bushnell, Vortex, PA Advanced, etc.

I consider "in-between" to be something like a 9mm AR-15. It's a gun you could use for serious work, but it's obsolete and not the first thing I would pick up. I want an optic that's going to be durable and reliable, but it doesn't necessarily need to be bomb-proof. OTOH, if you can buy Aimpoints and ACOGs for all your in-between stuff, well, go for it... wish I had those funds.

Have you tried the MSE ?

The MSE optic is basically obsolete now that Mepro has introduced the Tru-Dot, IMHO. No point spending $600 when you can get something better for $400 (auto-on/off and huge battery life beats multiple reticles any day of the week).

Also, let me note that my recommendations above are just starting points for thinking, not iron-clad rules. My Tavor doesn't have a magnifier, for example.

Im saving up for the MSE... Its the only thing that beats the eotech in terms of HDS.

For my ARs.. Its mostly Eotechs with FTS magnifiers. A couple of prismatic sights, 1-6x for three gun.

    308s get a 4-14x mildot scope.

I am really not a huge fan of magnifiers, despite my recommendation... I feel like most reflex+mag setups can be very heavy, especially when using cheaper brands.

    I have eotech 512. on a 16" barreled AR.
price $300-$400 range. I had a mail in rebate.
pros. I like the circle with the dot. easier and faster to line up quick shots
cons. with me wearing glasses the dot/circle appears grainy.

I went with the 512 mostly because of price. it was a good optic for the price.

I will not buy any magnification to go with the 512. I would get a 1x-4x or 1x-6x before I get a magnifier.

    I have a Lucid HD7 Gen III.
    Pros:
    Multiple reticles
    Common battery size (AAA)
    Protected turrets
    Auto adjust brightness
    Available 2X magnifier (screw in)
    Available 2-5x magnifier (sold seperately)

    Cons:
    No QD (well available seperately)
Auto shut off after 2 hours
    Heavy
Not AS battle proven as Aimpoint

If you want you can supply ammo and take it for a test drive.

That Lucid 2-5x magnifier is super-intriguing to me. I want a magnifier I can screw around with, and it looks flexible for that.

I have an Eotech XPS2 and magnifier. It sits on a .300BLK with 16" barrel. I also have a Trijicon ACOG 300BLK 3x30. For the money of the Eotech with the magnifier I compared to the Trijicon, I prefer the Trijicon. I might be convinced to sell my XPS and magnifier if your interested.

    what optic do you run?
Elcan Spectre DR 1-4x on an LE6920.

    What are the pros?
    Outstanding light gathering and clarity.
    Prefer this to the ACOG's.
Love the 1-4 mag change lever. 4x is fine to 300 yards.
Reticle etching is clear and easy to see/use.

    and cons to you?
No diopter to adjust focus for my aging eyes.

    price?
Ugh. Was $1800. The really bad news.

looking for a red dot and magnified optic .

what did you pick the pro up for price wise

If you pick the right time to get one, you can snag one for around $350. If you are considering one now, I would wait for Black Monday and see who has them on sale. Unless, of course, you spot a sale before then. I also bought one lightly used on M4Carbine.net, where people seem to always be swapping optics. It's where I got the variable, too.
