MSP will let you transfer regulated firearms to yourself. I know a few people that did transfers from deceased family members. It's NOT that big of a deal. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I think that's what they call "voluntary registration" at the MSP.

What Pinecone said. Hell most of my Handguns except some recent C&Rs were purchased before 96...in fact, most were purchased in the 80's. Nothing illegal there.

It all depends on the specifics. They may want to transfer the firearm from his deceased grandfather to him. I've seen that happen twice.

If he was given the trunk with the pistol prior to Oct 1996, and he was 21 or over at the time, the pistol was legally transferred at that point.
