Can anyone help me find the actual rules for how to transport a handgun in your vehicle. Frustrated by the experts saying that this is what has to be done, but hey cannot show me an actual reg. that says so.....Had a MD state trooper tell me the handgun must be disassembled in a locked case separate from mags and ammo..... where is this written? Better yet remove the cylinders from revolvers!!!!! Maybe true........show me

Disassemble firearm and hide all pieces separately in it's own locked container, except 1 piece. Leave that at home.
Drive to the range, put all containers on bench.
Drive home, get ammo and put in trunk.
Drive to range, drop the ammo.
Drive home and get the last pistol part.
Drive back to the range, assemble pistol, use ammo and enjoy the day.

    You forgot one.

Drive back home and grab the tools.

MD Statute 4-203. The cop and the other experts are wrong. The ammo and handgun separate thing is from the federal statute 926A, which has no bearing on trips starting and stopping in MD.

    No disassemble required

no one has ever defined what a bona fide collector is. Not in the statute, so use caution.

I'd lean towards thinking they are the same, but no definition and no case law.

But it does have to be kept unloaded separated from the ammunition.
    no it does not.
The MD statute makes no requirement for ammo to be separate. The Federal statute does, but has no bearing on trips that start and stop in MD. Read the MD statute.

Designated Collector is NOT a Bona Fide Collector.

It might help in the court case, but you may still be in court.

Playing devils advocate here, but what do you base that on? It has never been tested in court as far as I am aware, but it could easily be argued that an official state issued designation as a firearms collector constitutes "bona fides" (i.e., credentials or documentary evidence showing a person's legitimacy).

The problem is"bona fide" is not defined in the statute, leaving a certain amount of ambiguity about the relationship to Designated Collector status. it would help if the terminology in the statute matched the actual term used by the other statute.

But it's not and to the best of my knowledge, the question has not been answered by a court. It's been beaten to death here. Realizing that all collections start with one firearm, how confident are we a court would agree?

"Yes here's my collection of one firearm your honor."

But assuming they are the same might be problematic down the road. Just my .02

Well some here have intimated that having a DC letter qualifies them for the transport exemption for bona fide collectors under 4-203.

    Good luck with that.

What if it's more than one handgun?

If they do not define "bona fide" than what exactly does "designated" mean?

    Not debating...just learning, if I can. :o
