    The Range Master manages firing range facilities; conducts training in the safe and accurate handling of firearms and other law enforcement equipment; makes minor repairs to firearms and equipment; performs various administrative, clerical and maintenance duties to include seasonal maintenance at the HCSO range; performs other duties as assigned.


    Examples of Duties:
    Enforces approved HCSO procedures governing range safety.
    Organizes, coordinates and administers all range operations.
    Maintains and repairs targets, backstops, target frames, office, building and ground facilities.
    Inspects and maintains quality control standards for ammunition used at the range.
    Conducts monthly inventories to track ammunition use by Agency personnel.
    Orders range supplies as required.
    Builds and erects props for special training sessions.
    Prepares reports as required for the proper operation of the facility.
    Instructs recruits for both LE and CO academies.
    Provides in-service firearms training.
    Oversees all range activities and assures range is maintained in a clean and safe condition to include outdoor maintenance.
    Monitors outside agency personnel who use the range and ensures compliance with range use and safety rules.
    Inspects, maintains and repairs all Agency owned and privately owned weapons authorized for use.
    Inspects, cleans, and repairs all department owned shotguns.
    Maintains inventory records and adequate supplies while projecting future needs and placing supply orders.
    Periodically reviews and recommends changes to Agency weapons and ammunition.
    Maintains official records of all range activities, shooting scores and weapons authorized for carrying.
    Researches, develops, and writes instructional programs and/or lesson plans for firearms training.
    Develops and maintains relationships with all appropriate local, state and national agencies and organizations.
    Keeps Commander and relevant others informed of issues in a timely fashion.
    Cultivates and maintains positive relationships with agency and County staff.
    Attends meetings and participates in various teams when needed.
    Performs other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualification Requirements:
    Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
    Must have completed and maintained certification in a Firearms Instructor course through FBI, MPCTC, NRA or comparable agency. MPCTC Firearms Instructor certification is preferred.
    Must currently possess an Armorer’s Certificate or the ability to successfully obtain it within one (1) year of employment.
    Must have the ability to attend and successfully pass the MPCTC certified Instructor Course and Firearms Instructor Course within one (1) year of employment. Must also be able to maintain this certification.
    Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a law enforcement Range Master and Armorer, Military Range Officer, Firearms Instructor, or Law Enforcement Officer with Range Master experience.
    Minimum of three (3) years of experience in managing a firearms facility is preferred.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Thorough knowledge of firearms and the use and care of a variety of firearms and ammunition.
    Thorough knowledge of disassembling, cleaning, repairing and operating various types of firearms.
    Thorough knowledge of state laws (criminal/civil) relating to the use of a firearm.
    Thorough knowledge of safety precautions related to the use of firearms and ammunition.
    Knowledge of and ability to safely use hand and power tools for simple maintenance and repair.
    Thorough knowledge of and the ability to instruct the training of police officers in firearms-related matters.
    Ability to perform inspection, maintenance and repair of weapons and armory/range equipment.
    Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
    Ability to effectively speak in public forum.
    Ability to effectively and efficiently organize, track, and maintain training records and other relevant documentation.
    Ability to establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently to accommodate numerous deadlines; exercise independent judgment and demonstrate personal initiative.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; successfully communicate with other staff members, County staff, and members of the public; and work as a team.
    Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.
    Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software (MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), and office machines.

    Selected Candidate:
    Must be a U.S. citizen.
    Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; and polygraph exam.
    Must provide handwriting sample for review.
    Must appear before and receive a favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
    Must be willing to work permanent shift assignments on any shift needed to include weekends and holidays.
    Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity, and interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
