Technology wise I don't see real issues with the ideas of "smart guns" (just the implementation). The idea goes back to the 1950's with the A. E. van Vogt novels of a repressive future about the "Weapon Shops of Isher" (their store motto was "the right to buy weapons is the right to be free"). But in reality smart gun technology is just something else that can likely be hacked. If using some kind of wearable RFID device I could see even LEOs walking in a location where a dampening field is running and no one could get their guns to work of even out of the holster. And we all know that a finger print can be hacked under the right circumstances with the right technology. Even a locater beacon can be suppressed by a Faraday Cage. In effect without some kind of radical technology it all just a pipe dream.
If you want to reduce accidents a locked box/safe is a lot cheaper than pie in the sky technology.

Gun owners - whether law enforcement officers, hunters, or homeowners seeking to protect their property - expect their firearms to work seamlessly, under all conditions, without concern for technical malfunction.
We are probably about 30-35 years from a true "smart gun"
By then computer tech will be producing chips with the same complexity as the human brain (and doubling every year). Add a few cameras to the gun, Wi-Fi so the gun can interact with other intel (fixed cameras, other mobile cameras even satellites!) so THE GUN can identify friend from foe, safe fire dxns, etc. Add fingerprint, instant dna testing or whatever is available so the gun will know it's operator. Then toss in gyroscopes and servos to allow the gun to assist in aiming and control firing....yeah that would be "a smart gun".
But the B.S. spewed by politicians is for a pretty dumb gun.
