I just brought from a local gun shop a fully assembled upper, 20" with stock and lower kit. (BTW for around $570, does it sounds like a good price ?).

I was very excited with anticipation of building my own 20" AR15 until I look at the assembly under the lamp, the upper is deep purple. Just look so strange, not a classic black rifle I like to build.

I plan to take this back to the shop. If they can give me a truly full black upper, I will exchange it, otherwise I will return it.

I think I rush into buying it. May be I should research more in the 20" upper.
    My questions are:

Is del-ton upper good choice ? I saw an online ad from this place that offer the same deal (fully assembled upper plus fix stock and kit) from

    http://palmettostatearmory.com/20-hammer-forged-chrome-lined-mp-rifle-kit.html

But I am not sure if this is heavy battle. I looked throu the description and it did not say it is HBAR

    Any thought ?

Sorry you were disappointed in your upper. Delton does make a decent upper. My first AR was a Bushmaster and it was purple also. Took some getting used to but was a good gun. Palmetto sells great products cheap but they generally don't offer HBARs. So I'd stay away from them. Don't let it get you down. You will find that perfect upper. Good luck.

That's actually not unusual for AR finishes to look purple under the right light. Some people knock Delton but mine is 100% reliable and one of the most accurate ARs I own. Its one of my go tos.

Palmetto stuff is ok, have a lot of it, lots of guys I know have a lot of Palmetto too. It is cheap, it always runs...........they do run HBARs periodically.

If the shop has an all black upper for me to exchange, I will do it. Interesting it show the purple only under one particular florescent lamp. Otherwise I will not even notice it. I built 2 lower already and it was a lot of fun. I invest quite a bit in tools, like the roller pin/punch pin set, the wheeler kit to hold the part and that very useful tool to install the pivot pin. There is a lot of satisfaction in building your own AR15.

I dare not build the upper yet, just because of the barrel (head space precision etc.,). Watch one youtube warning there should be the right torque etc., kind of make me wary of building the upper.

I would think it's just the finish under a certain wave length of light looks purple. Otherwise I wouldn't worry bout it, but it's your gun, ask them to exchange it.

    Paint It.

Cammo, Race Gun Colors or whatever your heart desires.

Rattle Cans, Air Gun or Skin/Film. There are plenty of ways to customize your rifle if you hate the blackish purple.

I realize this isn't helpful, but I'm curious what that looks like. Any pictures of that purplish tint online? It sounds kind of cool actually haha.

Also, you can always paint it, as has been mentioned earlier.

Where do you live? I have the tools for the upper and have built my fair share of AR's. IIRC, when the barrel extension is installed on the barrel, they check the headspace at that time.

Avoid all florescent lighting and enjoy the upper.

Did a lot of machine work in the 70s and 80s, and it was completely common for black anodized parts to have a purpleish tint to them. Was more common on smooth, glossy surfaces than on matte-finish ones. Probably has to do with UV sensitivity of the dye used.

I've always considered it to be "normal" for that type of finish.

I'm having issues finding reasonable 20" uppers. Del-ton seems to be one of the few companies putting them out with regularity.

OK - so you do want an HBAR. Then BCM won't work. Rock River or Del-Ton then. I would prefer Rock River.

On occasion black anodizing will have a blue or purple tint to it. Have you reached out to the manufacture? They may accept a return to the manufacture but all depends on their quality policy and how they were originally sold. It's actually not very uncommon to see this.

Two Del-ton uppers here they are good to go. Don't know about the 20"s but a good 16" one goes for $450-$550.
