    I'm a registered democrat, in their district, a gun owner and a voter, I get a lot more attention than before when I would just say I was an independent.

    That is what I do too, except I like to also add that I'm not an NRA member. I find that not being an NRA member and supporting gun rights give you additional credibility with some folks, because once said membership gets out, then you automatically get lumped in with everything the NRA does, instead of being allowed to have an independent thought. I don't say, however, that I contribute financially to the NRA.
