This "armor piercing" ammo reclassification is a direct attempt to render firearms that are chambered for the popular 5.56 X 45mm ammo useless. The zealots can't ban the weapons using the proper Congressional route, so they use the ATF to bypass the 2nd amendment and congress. "Armor Piercing" ammo is no more deadly than a flat nosed lead bullet, of course impact point would have to be precise. A legal, law abiding citizen is not going to attack a police officer and a crook isn't going to adhere to any law affecting their criminal activities. Another act to punish the innocent to make it appear that the long arm of the Government is protecting law enforcement personnel.

The last few articles I've read should have said "Ammo manufacturers work with congress to create another ammo buying frenzy since ammo prices are dropping"! Okay that is mostly a joke...mostly.

It's important to point out this dual regulatory threat.

However, West seems to make an error in his column when he suggests that the 1986 legislation was directed at AR-15 ammo, when the legislators made is clear that it was directed toward handgun rounds (e.g. 9mm, 357 magnum, etc) designed to penetrate soft body armor. To suggest that AR-15 ammo was the primary legislative target and that ATF carved an exception, gives them too much sway in this argument. The exception exists because rifle ammo could be used from handguns, but BATFE was not supposed to restrict it.

The NRA has engaged the ATF in this argument before, btw, in late 2012 in fact ...

Neither before nor since the law's enactment, has an officer been killed due to such a bullet penetrating soft body armor.

NRA further pointed out that the legislative history of the law clearly shows that members of Congress, including the sponsor of the law in the House, Rep. Mario Biaggi (D-N.Y.), a decorated former NYPD police officer, expressly did not want the law to restrict rifle-caliber bullets that happen to also be useable in handguns chambered to use rifle cartridges.

...

NRA made clear that the sporting purposes exemption is straightforward: it applies to all projectiles that are "primarily intended for sporting purposes"--nothing more, and nothing less. Under the law, a projectile would be exempt if it is primarily intended for sporting purposes, even if it is secondarily intended for self-defense or some other legitimate purpose. Furthermore, the law does not condition its restrictive language or its "sporting purposes" exemption on the design of a particular handgun; the law is concerned only with specific projectiles that can be used in handguns. NRA cautioned the BATFE against interpreting the law in a manner more restrictive than Congress intended.

You have to wonder if someone on the -D side has stock in the ammunition industry, as prices have gone up significantly and will probably continue to do so.

two years ago you could get 1000 rounds for $399 or less. The lowest I've seen it today is $699 for 1000 rounds. And that's if it is even still available!

The panic buying is spilling into the M193 55gr 5.56 market too. Prices are up for the new manufactured, brass cased rounds and vendor inventories are starting to be sold out. Not nearly as bad as the run on M855 of course.

$500 for 1200 rounds of M193. Yeah, prices are rising because of the nonsense :mad54:

As far as 55 gr. stuff is concerned, I believe this is a short term panic at best, at least with regard to decent quality brass/boxer primed ammo.

If all you want is the absolute bottom of the barrel Russian steel cased "fire as many rounds as I can for the lowest possible price" blasting crap, there's plenty of that available as far as I can tell from Ammoseek etc., though the price on that stuff might have jumped .03 a round, I'm not absolutely certain about that because I rarely buy it.

Also, you know how things get garbled.

So there are going to be people running around saying that ALL 5.56 will be banned. Actually a couple of threads here have tried to say that.

So other unknowning people, without any research, go nuts buying 55 grain.

he was kidding.

Checking Walmarts on my errands yesterday shows that the 855 panic has indeed suctioned all 5.56 off the shelves.

"Back to the Future (2013 Edition)". I've seen this movie and don't like it...

When did Sig Braces get banned? Last I read you just can't use it as a shoulder stock.

If it is your intent to install the Sig brace as a substitute for a regular butt stock, then you are breaking the law, but who can say what a person's intent would be? Look up the definition the BATF uses for a handgun. We all break the law once we add our second hand to brace the handgun.

Obama To Ban Ammo By Executive Action!

Obama is using executive action to ban .556 M855 ammo used by sportsmen and hunters in their AR-15s. Obama could not ban AR-15s by convincing Americans we needed Feinstein's Assault Weapons Ban so he will instead ban the ammo and suffocate the market.

pwIQzwf.jpg
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) is using the argument that the .556 is "armor piercing" and we must get them off the streets to save citizens and police officers. They are trying to fast track to ban to get it done ASAP.

We have never seen such a bold an unlawful President that will push their personal agenda at any cost. He will probably try to get rid of Congress next!
WE MUST DEMAND every member of Congress do EVERYTHING in their power to stop Obama! What's after the .556? .223, .17, .308, 50 CAL, slugs?

BATFE's proposal would prohibit the manufacturing, importation, and sale of M855 ball ammunition which happens to be one of the most popular rounds used in the AR-15.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee has written a letter to the BATFE demanding an explanation for the bullet ban:
"This round is amongst the most commonly used in the most popular rifle design in America, the AR-15. Millions upon millions of M855 rounds have been sold and used in the U.S., yet ATF has not even alleged - much less offered evidence - that even one such round has ever been fired from a handgun at a police officer,"

Citizens and policemen alike are not buying the claim that this ban is to protect police officers:
Brent Ball, 17 year veteran police officer and current gun shop owner, said, "Criminals aren't going to go out and buy a $1,000 AR pistol. As a police officer I'm not worried about AR pistols because you can see them. It's the small gun in a guy's hand you can't see that kills you."

The argument the BATFE is shoving in our face to justify the bullet ban continues to be "armor piercing" and "pistol-style AR-15s". The next easy ammo to ban would be the .308 which are also commonly used in AR-15s.

Then what about pistol-style rifles like a Thompson Center that shoots .223, 30-30, 45-70 Govt. etc.

The point is it does not matter what the starting point is for Obama; If we do not stop this right now they will find a reason to ban the next caliber, next caliber, next caliber, and the last caliber until we are only left with pellet guns.

It is absolutely imperative we stop this ASAP. Our Congressmen must protect our Second Amendment rights and stop Obama from banning bullets for no reason.

We knew Obama was going to attack our rights before he left office, we just did not know it would be this bad.
