Thanks for offering these classes in SoMD

Thanks to organizations like CoonHunters, NAS PAX Shotgunners, and Sanner's Lake for offering these classes to help bring new hunters into the sport/activity.

Sadly, only around ~5% of Americans currently hunt. In order to protect and preserve this historic cultural tradition, we need to make it easy for new folks to join our ranks.

Sanner's Lake is expanding our course-offerings this year, after "selling-out" all of last year's classes.

Please share this information in the original post with anyone who might be interested. SLSC's classes are especially welcoming to youngsters, youths, and relatively new shooters.

If you have any questions, please contact Inigoes via PM or via e-mail at slsc-he@md.metrocast.net .

    Thanks!

I just registered my son. We don't hunt but the last time we were at Myrtle Grove we got the shake down asking for his hunter's safety cert. He took the online test but all the field day's were already booked up.

For those in Northern AA County or nearby, as of Thursday Stoney Creek Fishing and Hunting Club still had openings for the class this upcoming week. Classes are Monday and Thursday 6 - 10 pm and Saturday 8 am - 3pm. All sessions must be attended and a minimum score of 80 on the written test achieved. There is no age limit for this traditional class. Our last Traditional Hunter's Safety Class for 2015 will be in August. There will be some Saturday field practicals to complete Internet training after this but no more traditional classes are scheduled. Under 13 MUST take the Traditional class. FYI, while there is no legal lower limit as to age and we don't ever exclude anyone due to youth, it is rare for a kid under 8 to pass the course due to a fifth grade reading level of written materials and lack of test taking skills in children this young

Agree wholeheartedly with what SXS said above. Parents who bring their 5 and 6 year olds to the class are setting-up for likely failure, with the associated tears and acrimony that invariably follow.

Parents CANNOT assist the kids in taking the tests. But the instructors can and will read the entire test to anyone (regardless of age) who requests this assistance, but reading the test does not include giving hints for the correct answers.
