He'll mandate that police use them first. It allows him to advance anti-gun legislation and get cops killed at the same time. It's a solid win for two parts of his agenda.

    What is a safety, kids?

A safety is a mechanical (ok, maybe electrical nowadays) device that can fail or be tampered with.

Agree to a level, but since Feds give out money...and this isn't the first time that this has happened. How do you think local LDs got military grade hardware in the first place and you can thank NASA and a few other agencies on the tech that you have been using for years....and really, smart guns isn't that bad..cant wait till we get to the tech of something like Judge Dredd.

“For too long, the gun lobby blocked the kind of research that can help save lives," said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a group backed by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "Innovation is always welcome, particularly when it comes to safety. That’s why we applaud President Obama for taking this important first step."

    "First step," my ass.

Security just like smart phones you say? Ok sure, How many times and how often do you fail to unlock your phone on the first try? Want to trust that to unlock when some one is charging you?

As long as the other guy has to do the same securtiy-fumblings you do, then it's all the same, right?

(Don't know how you incorporate a fingerprint scanner on a crowbar or a hunk of pipe ...)

Someone needs to take away Obama's comic books and send him to time-out. Maybe write on the chalk board 100 times "comic book guns do not work in the real world."

I wonder how many negligent discharges will result because someone thinks their smart gun is safe.

From the link, "“These commonsense steps are not going to prevent every tragedy, but what if they prevented even one?” Obama wrote in a Facebook post."

I want to bang my head against a wall every time I hear this mouthful of stupidity.
